We are legitimately at least 10 deep and if you want to count Beckham, that's 11 with significant minutes played. And if you want to count Holcombe and possibly Shaugnessy Smith, we are looking at 13.

we are going to start Sidney over a guy that showed Stansbury and the rest of our fans that we were a better team with him on the floor? That was player of the game in 2 of the last 5? That now has 2 years a college experience?

That has the makings of a disaster

If this happens and Varnardo stays, there is going to be some really heavy competition for the two remaining starting spots. We'll give spots to Bost, Varnardo, and Sidney (assuming we probably have to promise him one to get him here.)

The last two spots will be up for grabs between Barry Stewart, Ravern Johnson, Phil Turner, Kodi Augustus, Romero Osby, and possibly even Elgin.

and if he doesnt, problems are going to arise. Augustus proved his worth when he helped shut down Tasmin Mitchell and allowed Turner to guard Thornton some, which allowed us to beat the SEC's best team in the SEC Tourney. Augustus was one of the few that wasnt over-matched when we played Washington in the NCAA Tourney.

I'd like to see us do this-

PG- Bost 28 mins, Beckham 12
SG- Stewart 22 mins, Turner 10 mins, Ravern 8 mins
SF- Augustus 14 mins, Osby 10 mins, Turner 8 mins, Ravern 8 mins
PF- Sidney 18 mins, Augustus 13 mins, Osby 9 mins
C - Swat 28 mins, Sidney 7 mins, Augustus 3 mins, Bailey 2 mins

In blowouts, guys like Benock can steal a few minutes, but that would be my rotation for the most part

Augustus isn't going to start at the 3. We should use a 3 man rotation at the 4/5 with Varnado, Sidney, and Augustus.

Ravern/Turner/Osby at the 3.

Bost/Stewart/Turner at the 1 and 2.

S. Smith should redshirt. And no one else should see the floor. You can't play that many guys unless you are going to play full-court basketball.

that plays hard all the time. I'm betting the only one you'll find would be Tyler Hansbrough, and I bet that even he played a few down minutes in high school. They are just so much better than their competition at that level.

if we do get Sidney we have to go with that lineup. I'm certain that the way we got Augustus to stay is we guranteed him a starting spot this upcoming season. I like him playing the 3 spot, I believe Stans put him at the 3 a couple times this past season. The only other guy that could compete with him there is Ravern and it just takes too much work to get Ravern the ball since he can't get his own shot.

Let's just see how this all pans out... I am pretty sure Stans would not start 3 Bigs... We would be at a disadvantage against smaller teams, Kodi would get taken off the dribble at the 3 on defense. On offense we would have an advantage, so maybe that is a wash, but you know Stans like his defense...
It will be a great problem to have... Sweet 16 and 30 wins...

1. Beckham is going to be improved and will be ok on the floor for 10 mins a game. Some young guys need a little longer to adjust to college basketball

2. If Augustus doesnt start, there is going to be hell to pay and a team divided. We have 10 guys we can play and will rotate players frequently. Team unity is worth starting Augustus at the 3 and then start rotating players at the 4 minute time-out.

3. Full-court basketball? What a novel idea

Phil is a high energy guy and plays hard, but with all the players we have, his minutes are going to get cut...we can only play 5 at a time...

We have Stewart, Turner, Benock, Osby, and Ravern competing for minutes at 2 positions...not to mention the fact that Augustus can play there at times...

minutes are going to get cut- plain and simple

Barry and Phil can both play point also, and I'd rather get Ravern more time or Benock some time than Beckham.

I think all of this is for naught. We all know Sidney will go to USC or some other random school and Varnado will get drafted in the 1st round somehow and we're more or less screwed in the paint next year.

Coach you've got Augustus playing more minutes than anyone on the team?
I'm all about playing the best players that give us the best chance to win. I think Phil Turner is a flat out better basketball player and more important to our team than anyone outside of Varnado and maybe Bost (only b/c we don't have another PG) Phil is better than Augustus, plain and simple especially when you take into consideration his attitude of being a team player, how unselfish he is on offense, and how hard he plays on D and on the boards.
Why should his minutes be cut? Augustus had a couple of good games, that's it. He hasn't proven anything over the long term, not to mention he seems to be the troublemaker, the one with the attitude of not being a team player, and the one causing the division on the team. We don't need to cater to him b/c he'll cause division if we don't, he needs to become a team player b/c he's not good enough to make concessions for, he's certainly not as good as you think he is.

what I wrote was just a general guideline, but there is no doubt that Augustus needs to be on the floor as much as anybody. Phil is not better than Augustus. Phil is a hustle player that will rebound and get after it. He can make some shots. But, Phil plays a position that is going to have to be shared with a large number of people on our team. Phil doesnt need to play the 4 spot ever again for us on the floor- thats why his minutes will be cut. Ask Tasmin Mitchell who he'd prefer guard him, he'd choose Turner every time over Augustus. With Augutsus,Sidney, and sometimes Osby, there is no need to put Phill at the 4.

Oh really? Is that why Brian Johnson tried to take himself out of a game so Stansbury would put Augustus in? The players know who should be on the court.

Yet he was good enough to elevate our team to an SEC Tourney title and receive Player of the Game honors in 2 of the last 5. Sounds like he is someone we need on the court to me, and to most people who look at it objectively.

Opinions are opinions, and neither mine nor yours can be considered right in this situation necessarily, b/c the coaches' opinions on the players are all that matters.

But, I think Phil Turner is a better basketball player than Augustus, is more important to this team, a better team player, and even a better 4. And if you asked this board to vote objectively as to who they would want on the floor in crunch time and who they trusted more, I'd expect a 70% vote in favor of Turner.
You can't just take out one game and say Mitchell had a great game while Turner was in. Looking at it over the course of the season, I would say Turner was one of our best defenders, even against the 4. UT probably had the best 4 in the SEC in Tyler Smith (who shot 4-14 against us during the season)

I also think that 70% of this board, which is seemingly objective, would say that Kodi is the most selfish player on the team and the one that causes the most division and isn't worth the trouble(definitely expendable if we were to get Sidney)

It's also pure speculation to assume that we wouldn't have won the SECT without Kodi and w/ Bailey. He played well against UGA, but hurt us just as much as he helped us the rest of the tourney.

I'm not sure what your reasons are for your love affair w/ Kodi, other than the fact that you can use this theory as another way to discredit Stansbury and paint him in a negative light

Phil had the better season LAST YEAR. I love Phil to death. He is a warrior. But Phil also got abused some down the stretch The 4 guard line-up is ok for a change of pace, but as was shown even in a down SEC, it cant be a way of life. Phil could start at the 3 easily, and should if Sidney doesnt sign. But if Sidney signs, Turner should be the 1st sub we make off the bench.</p>

Whats not speculation is that we lost to Tenn and LSU when Augustus wasnt getting any minutes, yet beat them when he did. That is a fact my friend. Its also a fact that Phil got abused both times by Mitchell, yet struggled in game 3 when Augustus played. Phil needs to be putting the clamps on the SF's and SG's we play against, not guys 6'7 or 6'8.

There is no love affair with Kodi, just a recognation of the fact he makes us a better team when he plays. Hell, the players on the team say he is the best shooter we have. Johnson tried to make Stansbury put him in a game. I mean damn, when the players on the team want him on the floor, that tells you alot. Especially as selfish as athletes are.</p>

The board can vote any way they want, but it doesnt make it correct. The board said Walter Sharpe would never amount to **** once he left State. Wonder what he is doing these days? We need the talent on the floor this next season, not on the bench.</p>

Could the same not be said for Phil Turner?

There is no way Stans is benching Stewart. I'm not saying I agree, I just don't see it happening. I think your guaranteed starters are Bost, Stewart, and Varnado. I think the others are up for grabs, though I would think we'd guarantee Sidney a starting spot to get him to come.
