Barney was too much of a wuss to hire Petrino. Even though he is thought to be scum, I say so what, we would be winning games.
Would you be willing to hire the devil himself if it would guarantee 8 + wins every year. It's a football GAME for crying out loud!

Honestly here, I'm not so sure with what we had. We would have probably ended up with a slime ball who couldn't win here. A great combo.

Fair enough and good post. Don't get me wrong - I think Petrino is one heckuva coach and I'd love it if he were our coach b/c we probably would have gone bowling the last two seasons and he'd have us rocking this fall. But there was always a risk he'd bolt (whether that be for UL or an upper echelon SEC school). And then we'd be back to square one.

I do feel like Stoops was the right hire for UK at the time and has us still trending upward, even if the on field performance has stalled at 5-7 the last two years. Recruiting is better under Stoops than it would have been with BP; and we have some awesome facilities now.

Stoops crown jewel 2014 class will be juniors this fall. These guys should be ready to win some games this fall, with sights on doing something big in 2017.
I agree I think what some people lose sight of (or don't realize) is how much harder it is to go from 5 wins to 7 than it was to go from 2 wins to 5. Stoops got to 5 by beating the cupcake OOC teams, Vandy, South Carolina, and Mizzou. We can beat those teams with a solid starting lineup without as much experienced/developed depth. When you start talking about the 6th or 7th wins you are going to have to beat UGA, Florida, Tennessee, UL, or Mississippi St. All teams that historically recruit top 10 classes or have been on historic runs of success since Stoops arrived.

It was a natural stage of progression to plateau at the 5 win mark until our depth, experience, and physical maturity matched that of the teams that we have to beat to take the next step. Having said that Stoops and the staff missed a huge opportunity against UL, Vandy, Auburn, and Florida last year. The fact that Stoops had this team so close is both frustrating and encouraging. I believe this staff has the team on schedule or maybe even a little ahead of schedule but that will be determined this year. The rise of college football programs isn't always perfectly linear and many times the breakout happens very suddenly when there aren't a lot of folks predicting it. I am optimistic about this season and like you I am looking at 2017 as the year that the Cats make noise on a national level

If Stoops is a failure, then I'm not sure we will ever see any football success at UK. Personally, I think I'll fold my cards and go home at that point - I'm too old and tired.
If that does happen, Barnhart "should" go offer Tom Herman whatever it takes. But, what Barnhart will do is hire Eddie Gran as HC.
BINGO!!!!!!!! I don't trust that buffoon to make another hire!!!!

"If Stoops can't get it done here, nobody will." This is an often repeated refrain on this board. I am happy that some people have provided competent counters to it. The truth is that if Stoops is let go, he will have left the program in much better shape than when he arrived, and the next coach will have more sum talent at his disposal than Brooks or Joker ever did. To say that it will "never" happen here if Stoops doesn't make it happen is shortsighted.

Barnhart would def not need to go. Dude has made great hires with volleyball, softball, track and field, and fixed his BCG blunder by hiring Cal. The non-revenue sports have never been stronger.

If Stoops fails, that means UK is in a position somewhere between Joker and Brooks, or a 5-win plateau in other words. That probably translates to an up-and-coming coordinator. UK being in the SEC will draw a lot of names. Should have a good pool of candidates.
If he does fail we now have the opportunity to hit a Homerun with the next hire! We have it all in place with the facilities and a couple of key young multi -millionaires who I know personally that will feed the program $$$$! We are on the cusp of something Big with or without Stoops! But in the end if Stoops does not get the wins he is solely responsible for the success that will come with a new coach!

By that record you posted and sec finishes looks like stoops is getting better each year. Could that be a sign of better talent and depth?

Stoops will succeed here. And if he doesn't, Mitch will just tell you that he is succeeding and you'll just have to believe it or go kick rocks.
