Fair enough and good post. Don't get me wrong - I think Petrino is one heckuva coach and I'd love it if he were our coach b/c we probably would have gone bowling the last two seasons and he'd have us rocking this fall. But there was always a risk he'd bolt (whether that be for UL or an upper echelon SEC school). And then we'd be back to square one.
I do feel like Stoops was the right hire for UK at the time and has us still trending upward, even if the on field performance has stalled at 5-7 the last two years. Recruiting is better under Stoops than it would have been with BP; and we have some awesome facilities now.
Stoops crown jewel 2014 class will be juniors this fall. These guys should be ready to win some games this fall, with sights on doing something big in 2017.
I agree I think what some people lose sight of (or don't realize) is how much harder it is to go from 5 wins to 7 than it was to go from 2 wins to 5. Stoops got to 5 by beating the cupcake OOC teams, Vandy, South Carolina, and Mizzou. We can beat those teams with a solid starting lineup without as much experienced/developed depth. When you start talking about the 6th or 7th wins you are going to have to beat UGA, Florida, Tennessee, UL, or Mississippi St. All teams that historically recruit top 10 classes or have been on historic runs of success since Stoops arrived.
It was a natural stage of progression to plateau at the 5 win mark until our depth, experience, and physical maturity matched that of the teams that we have to beat to take the next step. Having said that Stoops and the staff missed a huge opportunity against UL, Vandy, Auburn, and Florida last year. The fact that Stoops had this team so close is both frustrating and encouraging. I believe this staff has the team on schedule or maybe even a little ahead of schedule but that will be determined this year. The rise of college football programs isn't always perfectly linear and many times the breakout happens very suddenly when there aren't a lot of folks predicting it. I am optimistic about this season and like you I am looking at 2017 as the year that the Cats make noise on a national level
