If the PLAYOFFS started today.... (Week 6)

Every Monday, I bracket the 256 playoff teams using the IHSA Playoff Outlook. This is NOT a prediction. These are NOT my opinions. It is simply the most logical way the playoffs would be bracketed, using the IHSA's specific system, if today's standings were the final standings.

Each week I usually have to add/subtract teams to get a true 256. The Outlook doesn't adjust for the teams ineligible for the playoffs from the CPS "Chicago" conferences (teams who finish 3rd place and lower). The Outlook doesn't adjust for a conference champion falling below the cutoff. I take care of all that before proceeding.

My adjustments.....

I pulled Collins (2A), North Lawndale (4A), and Sullivan (4A) out of the playoffs because of the CPS "Chicago" conference rule. I inserted Urban Prep/Bronzeville (4A), Morgan Park (5A), and Elmwood Park (5A) into the playoffs because their conference had zero qualifiers per the Outlook. I simply chose the top team listed by record and playoff points. That left us with 256 teams. No need for further tie-breakers this week... Whew!!! Team 256 is 3-2, 19 pp, the same as last year. 3 teams miss the field with that same record, but the IHSA already broke that tie for me. Those teams are Hardin-Calhoun (1A), Red Bud (2A), and Frankfort (3A).

There are 11 teams at 3-2 with LESS than 19 playoff points. These teams probably need to win 6 games because there isn't much time left for their playoff points to improve dramatically. They are Chicago Military/Bronzeville, Mooseheart, Madison, Villa Grove-Heritage, Illini West, Chicago Christian, Thornridge, LaSalle-Peru, CPS Washington, Glenbrook North, and Taft. During conference play, there is rarely a big swing in playoff points. If any of these teams have great non-conference opponents, that will help going forward.

From there, I adjust teams up and down into the proper classes to create 8 classes of 32 teams. My classes were 32-32-32-34-31-32-31-32 respectively. So.... Geneseo and Morris down to 4A, Clark down to 3A, and Pana down to 2A.

I don't see quads in the 2015 or 2016 playoffs, and they aren't mentioned in "How the matchups are determined", so I'm not using quads unless I get new information. I'm using the Playoff Outlook updated at 10:00 AM on 9/25. I'm not making further adjustments.

Next week you get 8A thru 2A, and I continue to add a class each week until week 8. For week 9, I give you the final projection with team nicknames. For week 10, we scramble the actual playoffs into 1999 mode and show what it would look like with just 6 classes.

6A North has 7 undefeated teams right now, and 6A South has just 1. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a wacky east/west bracket dividing line from the IHSA if this disparity holds up all year. They did it in 8A a few years ago.

As always, hats off to Catch! You make our day.

Here is my "if" game for this week:

If GW ends up 7A (come on DSN and or Eville/WV)
AND they end up #8 Seed replacing SCN as 4-1 with 22 points,
AND GW gets past Fenwick,
AND LWC gets past Shaumburg,
GW/LWC 2nd round meeting would be first between Hetlet and his protege' Jeremy Cordell.

Wouldn't that be a fun game to see with each playing against their own defensive scheme.

Catch really enjoy these posts. Great work!

Any way you could include who was the smallest / largest enrollments in each class?
(Saves me a trip to ihsa.org).

Not so fast there Sparky...GW is rebuilding into their own brand of beast and might put up a fight before those semis.
I say this with the utmost respect for you and your program but there is no way they beat Beast. Unless of course the injury bug hits them crazy hard.

LA will be fortunate and humbled to just be in the IHSA playoffs. Just a bunch of hard working high school students doing their thing. Not much expected of them. Whomever they play against, I am sure they'll be ready and they really do not care. . No beast, swagger or any other attitude. When they get off the bus, their tradition gets off with them. Serious, focused and ready to individually do their assignments as they are coached. THE Loyola Academy.

Why do you feel like puking? Nothing in the post is derisive towards towards any team that LA competes against. Again, they have a quiet confidence. They don't discuss past wins or losses, nor do they care, and are coached to prepare for that particular weeks game, ( according to parents of players on the team ). If being humble, respectful and not braggadocious as a program and as a high school student is now seeing as something that makes you puke, then, I am sorry to have put you in that state of mind. As I stated in a previous post, they are keeping their mouths shut, going about their business and hoping to make the playoffs on a high note and to compete.

I would agree with that but part of being humble involves not telling people how humble you are.

@Catch--22 will you be making an appearance at PHS for the Barrington game?

I really want to eagles. I'd put it at 75/25. I'm off Friday, and a couple U of I alum friends want to head down Thursday night for the Friday night game vs Nebraska. I'm trying to convince them that married dumbasses like us don't need an extra night unsupervised on a college campus... one night should be plenty to get us in trouble. There's also that whole Bears/Packers thing happening. But now that I know I can be on live TV in Palatine, staring at my phone, while dozens of viewers tune in to see ME, that's just too enticing to pass up.

Agreed. As someone who is a fan of how they play and what they represent, the constant berating at times though needs to be responded to. Since it seems that people involved with the program are not on this blog ( parents, coaches or players ) I felt it's appropriate to give them their due in such a challenging year. I don't think they are being hyped. They are just high schools students and athletes who are playing each game as they are being coached to do. We can agree to disagree on how that's accomplished. It's all good.

Pretty sure there a few LA supports around here. They usually lay in the weeds waiting for loud mouths like me to express unrestrained hubris before pouncing on their prey. That is why most of us have learned to shut up and leave them to their weinerfests.

Believe me - much respect for your school and community. Glen Ellyn a beautiful place. Some people may have taken issue with your field - I loved the setting and atmosphere. Its not something you get to see very often

Wait wait wait. This is not a knock on LA at all, as a matter of fact I was the one that said it was no big deal, just run some extra sprints. BUT this is the squad with "the best D in the nation"

Nothing wrong with a little swag in your step.

If you don't think Ramblinman would have defended the justified honor of LA, you've not been paying attention.

When you start with the muck about being fortunate to make the playoffs, all BS meters will perk up.

I totally understand how you may think that. I spoke to their coach on a recruiting trip ( just kidding ) a year ago, and he explained that their thought process was not to get ahead of themselves and he understood how tenuous the difference between losing and winning is. An injury or two and you are watching the playoffs from a sofa instead of competing. Couple that with getting the opponents "A" game week to week and you never know. This year they were decimated with injuries but are fortunate to be winning their games.

Who's berating them, other than the Weinergate people? And there are plenty of LA people on this board. Your posts are seriously disjointed, and waxing poetic about the little gang from LA, perennially whipped and the consistent underdog is making the bulk of us run for the vomitorium. Quit while you're ahead. Or behind. Whatever, just stop.
