If there were no byes for conf champions…

There should be no debate at all. Like none. Make it like the NFL where the top 2 from each of the power 4 make the playoff, then the find a way to get in the non power 4 champions. Even with all the debate, AL, MS, or SC would have gotten their *** whipped last night in Columbus or State College.

Not only that, because #3 and #4 are actually the worst teams remaining in the field (presumably), the #5 and #6 teams get much easier matchups than the #1 and #2 teams who beat them last week.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Notre Dame beats Oregon or Ohio State beats Oregon. I'd be much more surprised with Arizona State or Boise State winning.

Just a terrible bracket design all around. There are plenty of systems and proposals floating around out there, but just taking 16 teams with no byes and no special seeding rules would have been much better.

Top 16 with no special rules, other than guaranteeing 5 conference champions (who were all in the top 16 anyway)
  • 9 Boise State @ 8 Indiana
  • 10 SMU @ 7 Tennessee
  • 11 Alabama @ 6 Ohio State
  • 12 Arizona State @ 5 Notre Dame
  • 13 Miami @ 4 Penn State
  • 14 Ole Miss @ 3 Texas
  • 15 South Carolina @ 2 Georgia
  • 16 Clemson @ 1 Oregon
Most of these games would have been pretty good.

All the conferences had to buy in/. I’m sure this was part of the negotiation/. But yes, these games sucked. And now you have let the non conference champions like Ohio state get a home game against the better team before they go play the inferior team on the road.

ETA: Clemson / Texas wasn’t terrible

Much better matchups.
Are they, though? You think ASU gives OSU a better game? Knowing what we know today, maybe, but you wouldn't have thought so yesterday.

The real problem with the seeding is the rapidly changing environment. When this was set up, we had 5 power conferences. Now we have 3, plus whatever you think of the Big 12ish. (the ACC is weak, but has enough teams that it should be able to produce some worthy participants in most years).

I don't mind changing the seeding, but I like the idea of rewarding conference champions. I'm sure there is a happy medium somewhere.

This weekend was the first time playoff games had been hosted on campus. It was totally new. I'm sure the visiting teams had played in big road games before, but not like this. Early mistakes by the QB bit every visiting team.

Oregon is the team who really got screwed with this ridiculous bracket. The only undefeated and clear number 1 team has by far the toughest road to the title. They have to play Ohio State, then if they win that one, then they play Texas. Meanwhile Penn State gets to play Boise State and Notre Dame plays Arizona State. It’s insane and only complete morons could’ve come up with such a idiotic bracket.

They need to reseed after the first round

OSU is seeded too low at 8. I would have put them at 5, but even if they were 6 or 7 I would have put them ahead of PSU who they beat on the field.

But, OSU lost to Michigan, and I think the committee punished teams for bad losses. It helps explain Bama and UMiss missing out.

I think #5 is too low in a true seeding. Ohio St is a team that could win the championship.

It’s the first damn year. 12 teams in = great news. Home playoff games = fantastic. Sure certain improvements are necessary but it’s way better than anything we’ve had before

They are going to have to fix the format. Again, I wish they would go back to the BCS formula and take the top 12 seed them based on that formula.

Someone also ran the numbers and the margin of victory was about the same as it was in the first round games of the 4 team playoff.

Doesn't all the commentary here and all over the Internet prove there is not a perfect way to do this? The whole reason for getting to this 12 team playoff was you can't rely on a bunch of people in a room trying to decide who the best teams are. This way at least the champion gets decided on the field and not by people in a room.

Maybe the best way would be remove the byes and go 16 teams and have the Vegas odds makers set the odds. Then pick the bracket out of a hat and the higher rated team gets the home game. That way all 16 teams have an equal shot based on luck.

I was thinking similar to several of you. Too much bias when people pick.

I get rid of byes, move to 16 teams, take the 10 conference champs & 6 at large. Let the non-P4 get their 1 shining moment like March Madness.

Develop an algorithm without human polls considered to pick the 6 at large and set the seeding. We use AI and machine learning for more & more things. Let a computer analyze data over the past 20 seasons to develop the selection/seeding algorithm. Higher seed hosts until the College Super Bowl.
