If we average a touchdown more per game on offense than last year...

I wont be too terribly upset if we only win 3 games this year. Does anyone else agree? I think its clear that the defensive talent is not great, and the defensive scheme of Carl Torbush may not be around next year if things continue like they did Saturday. But we have a good young base on the defensive line, and a good piece in KJ at LB and Mitchell at safety. I envision either Michael Carr or Jameon Lewis competing at CB next year with the speed and athleticism they have. Next year, a guy like Washington will be gone, and hopefully Zach Smith will been replaced. We will also hopefully have Skinner playing LB that is quicker around the edge. The offense is obviously working better than last year because good offensive recruits typically make a bigger impact quicker. Mullen has put his stamp on the offense and special teams. All thats left is to get the secondary players we need on defense and an offensive line and we will be ok. It may take 2 years to get to a bowl game but the have great pieces from this last class in place to build on.

Especially, if we give up two more touchdowns per game on average. Football is a team sport. We have to improve overall before that can be called true progress.

A three win season is a three win season. It's just asinine to me to think that some people would be thinking "Well, we won three games but we scored a ton of points". To me, that's a waste of a good offense. And vice versa with a good defense, but a horrible offense.

I mean, is it possible to have a good offense AND a good defense AND a solid special teams unit in the same season? The only teams in the SEC that can't seem to do it are MSU and Vandy.

I just think it's ridiculous. I mean, go out and get a guy like Dick Bumpas at TCU, pay him a buttload of money and sell the SEC thing to him and enjoy a good defense while we got Mullen/Hudspeth/Koenning/Hevesey/Whoever else calling plays on offense. What a concept! Being good in all phases of the game!

The only MSU teams that I can recall that were even close to being like that since I've been paying attention (1991 for reference) were 1991, 1994, 1998, and 2000. And that's it. Unreal.

It's uncanny that our defense goes in the tank as soon as we get a decent offense and special teams. Amazing.

As long as the defense is substantially worse than last year, I'll seriously question whether or not I'll renew season tickets for next year. I'd like to be supportive, but I'm very very sick of gross incompetence.

Thats not really what I'm saying. In the past, the defense has been good, but the offense was terrible because we had no playmakers. Now, the offense is good, but the defense is bad. However, the defense has young pieces that will be good the next few years, like Boyd, Cox, and Mitchell. I'm not saying that I'm hoping we win 3 games, but if begin to score points in Mullen's system, and the short term problem of the team is the defense, I think we can fix that more easily. We scored 24 points against a pretty good Auburn defense, and that is purely because Mullen was brought in to fix the offense, and so far it looks like he has at least made it look a hell of a lot better, even with a fairly bad QB situation. If Mullen can now sell the defensive aspect of this, we will be set. He came in to fix the offense, not thinking the defense would be this bad. Now he knows what he has to do, he can say, "well look what I did with the offense and special teams in one year," and I think kids will buy it.

and first of all let me say that I like Mullen, I think he'll do a great job and so far I'm pleased with his overall performance.

That said, the fact of the matter is, it looks to me like he doesn't know a whole lot of great defensive coaches because he obviously got Torbush off of the scrap heap, probably on the recommendation of Koenning. I'm guessing that up until last night Torbush had the run of the farm as far as the defense goes- which is not a bad thing if your DC is good.

I think what would sell our defense is having an aggressive, attacking defense. I know if I was a LB or safety I would want to blitz and have the opportunity to make big plays instead of sitting back in zone and getting beat by WR's and TE's and have to chase running backs around all night.

Sent an unsought resume and got the job. Apparently, his resume is better than his ability to coach.

I'll say this: Typical M-State football. Why do we do **** like that? Seriously? I'm pissed because we are losing, but in many ways, we get what we deserve.

and have replaced them with damn near nothing. Our talent level on defense is a lot lower than last year. Of course, piss poor coaching isn't helping matters either.</p>

....is that MSU still sux just as much ***, except they're doing it the opposite way they usually do it. Unfortunately I don't believe they're going to even win three games. It looks like two at best, three if they're able to beat both Vandy and MTSU on the road. There's no other game on the schedule they can win.

17 no!! 3 wins is 3 wins is 3 wins. All that means is you can lose 7 points more excitedly.

That just means we're taking ourselves out of the games we scratched out in the past by having a worse defense. In the past, although we couldnt score, we kept the other team from scoring as well and were a turnover or great return from winning a game.

If we avg. 7 more points and get the same number of losses, it just means our defense cant keep us in those games anymore

and Bowman is far better than any down tackle. O'Quinn and Pegues are also a lot better than their replacements.

Douglas, Glanton, Fitzhugh, Pegeus, Bowman, and a few DE's that were solid but not great, were all really good players.

I don't think Torbush did ya'll any favors by letting Todd just sit back and throw rainbows, but there is no way you can say the talent isn't worse this year.
