what would be the benefit of committing in the summer months vs waiting until the fall or even January?

If you get hurt, the school is less likely to drop you if you are committed to them already.<div>If you are an average player and wait to commit, you may look around at the end and everyone's boat is full</div>

I remember it being a relief once my college plans were finally nailed down. The uncertainty of not knowing where you are going to be living and who you may or may not be around in the future can cause a lot of anxiety to a teenager.

Preventing another high school prospect, who is willing to commit, from taking your spot. 1 in the hand 2 in the bush.

so you're free to concentrate on whatever else you want during your senior year - girls, school, sports, partying.I remember my senior year being the coolest time of my life up to that point. No way I would have wanted to hassle with all the questions. I'd probably be ok with coaches calling me, but the recruiting services and fans would bug the piss out of me.

Also, in the small town I came from you'd be considered a god if you had a scholarship to play sports at any SEC school. Why not go ahead & make it official in July rather than January?

this on the lesser-known guys. However, I'm not so sure this is the case with the high profile recruits.

What percentage of early recruits change their mind? Quite a few. The fan bases get nasty when a recruit wavers and changes. If non committal, all the fan bases will give you a virtual internet BJ until you commit. If you are a marginal recruit with an offer, hold out as long as you can. Nothing wrong with committing in OCT if your Senior season isn't going well.

You probably also get tired of creepy old men who want to know your favorite pizza toppings or want to see what you look like with your shirt off while performing your favorite dance moves, calling you and harassing you non-stop. Or the lunatic alumni in your home town pressuring you every day.
