If you could change one play in MSU sports history

The choke at South Carolina 2000 when the 3rd stringer came in and on 1 play...converted the play to win that game.

Well there was this line drive that hit an MSU pitcher in the 1985 CWS

1981 Eggbowl pass interference debacle in the endzone.
1983 Eggbowl gust of wind disaster. Never seen anything like it.
1984 regional final Dudy Noble Jeff Brantley giving up grandslam to Stuart Weidie. Never heard Dudy Noble so quiet.
I was at all three.

1. P. Price TD in 1998 SECCG
2. The Prather punt return to the goaline at Alabama in 99 that was called back for a block in the back.
3. South Carolina qb on 4th down/toefields fumble in Baton Rouge, and westerfields block FG in 2000. All of those could equally fit in this spot.

And this is my out of left field entry:

Tyus Edny's 90ft sprint last second layup against Missouri in the 1995 NCAA Tournament stings when I think about it. UCLA beat us in the Sweet 16 as they went on to win the national title that year. We would have been playing Missouri with a chance to move on to the round of 8.

There are plenty of last second moments that could make this list. But had the plays above had different results, our athletic history would look a little bit different.

Another for me would be the Peterson 2 pt conversion in the 97 Egg Bowl. That hurt. Another would be the play Chad Jones made for LSU a few years back. Then there are 2 or 3 big plays against Kentucky in basketball thinking back 10-12 (Erik Daniel tip in) & (Cousins/Wall) years that I'd like to have changed.

Relf @ Auburn 2011. The only time in Relf's time here, he was dropped dead in his tracks after a hit & this hit had to happen at the 6 inch yard line. Brutal.

Tyson Lee at the goal line vs. LSU.

Caleb Reed's hanging curve against Florida in the 2011 Super.

Butler's last second shot against us in 2003. I think we go to the Elite 8 against Carmelo and 'Cuse if we don't lose our first game.

The dropped INT that would have given us the lead against Cam a Newton...

...and Auburn. Anything to have kept those *** holes from playing for the title

This. Broomfield dropping that pick then Berry dropping the pass with only seconds left. Those two aren't CWS or sec title changing plays for us, but it's a national title changing play for Auburn. That Broomfield dropped int trumps anything I've seen.

2004 home basketball game against UK where they made the last second tip in after we had stormed back to take a 1 point lead. Such a kick in the nuts.

It's gotta be the pig punt return. It came down between that and the SECCG with Peerless Price but they scored again so

Yea - I was close to saying the SECCG but there wasn't one play that stopped us from winning.

That KP punt return is still in my top 3 of MSU football plays in my lifetime. What a crazy few minutes that was as a State fan.

The field goal that went backwards at the goalpost in a loss to OM during Bellard years.

The "hold" against Alabama in 1999. Come out of Tuscaloosa with a win, we play for the national title most likely.

Nothing else is even close. Change that play and we win an SEC championship in football and go to the Sugar Bowl.

Call me a closet rebel, but I find great amusement in the 1983 Egg Bowl. Granted, I was 2 at the time so I didn't experience it live, but having a play like that in our history is pretty damn amusing.

I'd change the Punt Return in the 1999 Alabama game. If we win that game, we win the SEC West and go to Atlanta for the second straight year.

The second qtr fourth and 2 Dak incomplete pass on the om 18 in last years egg bowl. Score a td on that drive and we go up 21-10 and have momentum but om took over on Downs and scored to take a 17-14 lead. Who knows maybe if we scored there things would be different now...maybe.

^^ This. I know it's been said before that nothing comes close, but in this case it's true. It was late in the year, so yeah, we really do have a shot to go undefeated. I could say the Phil Petty pass over Kendall Roberson in Columbia in 2000, but that was early we choked away a few other games after that.

I don't know that we get into the National Title over Virginia Tech that year with Vick, but we likely win the SEC and play in the BCS, even with an Arkansas loss.

1981 Bama game.........

the fumble we didn't recover or Bond's interception with a minute to go. Win that game and we probably win out and play for the NC in the Sugar Bowl.

It's the Peerless Price catch. Nothing else comes remotely even close. Well, the Gene Morgan line drive off the foot would probably be the close 2nd.

Can't help but notice:
Several of these don't really involve changing the actual play, but boil down to "if the ref does his job correctly (know the rules and not make **** up), we probably win."

1981 Egg Bowl
99 Bama game
BOTH UK Wall/Cousins games

But since the officials in the "greatest conference in collegiate athletics" have a tendency to act like rasslin' refs in crunch time, here we are.

I'll second the 81 and 83 egg bowls. I'll also add Sleepy not get his knee mangled.

'85 CWS and the line shot off Gene Morgan. That doesn't happen and I really think John Cohen would be working on our 2nd national championship. No doubt that would be my choice as far as one play goes.
