Agree, but there are other teams similar to Michigan style of offense. I also like UCLA and Oregon and HELL even Creighton comes to mind.
Thing is you have to have the shooters and rebounders and ball handlers too.

The pick and pop will always kill a Miles team, until the defense changes. I just want some shooters, and movement (movement other than just put head down and drive to basket, throwing up a prayer)
Notre Dame. Their offense is incredibly efficient every year even with comparable recruiting talent to us. Brey is a hell of a coach.
The players Nebraska has recruited don't lend themselves to a wide open offense because they can't shoot with high efficiency. They are built around slashing to the hoop.
Of course it would be great to have shooters but the make up of this team is more in line with a Michigan State offense. Only the defense isn't Sparty tough.

One of my frustrations with Miles offense. We've got slashers, but whereally are the plays to get easy baskets on cuts to the rim?
It's going to take a lot for Morrow to get to 14/15 PPG. I really like him, but his offensive game is super limited at the moment.
His main role isn't scoring a ton of points.. It's rebounding on both ends.
Miles loves this dribble/drive O. I watched a local NAIA team do that for years, finally fired the coach last year. Even in that type of game, the driver hits the open guy who should be squared up to hit the shot. The idea is not to get all the way to the bucket every time by driving but to bring the D to you and then find the open guy for an easy shot. Right now I couldn't tell you if we have the shooters we need. My goodness, seems like every team we play has guys who can drain the 3's. What we don't have are guys who are smart with the ball in the driving situation. They get too deep with nowhere to go or they jack up some ridiculous shot that has not prayer of going in.
There are just so many little things this team does not do well. I can't count the number of times we get turned sideways on D and have our side or even back to the guy. Guys don't have good footwork,slip, fall down, it is awful. A more aggressive brand of D will result in a better O most of the time.

I agree. And he does a really good job at it. But he struggles with the ball. He almost always takes a dribble when on the post instead of going right back up with it. He really needs to learn to keep it high. And when he gets the ball on the outside and he dribbles, it's bad. He has no outside shot and his post moves are limited. His only consistent offense is offensive rebounds.
As I said in a previous post, I like Morrow. He is a great rebounder. But his offensive game is not good. And it will take a lot of off-season improvement for him to get to the level of putting up 15 PPG.
How about this team? How many times are we going to pass the ball?

Yes, but they are great at getting their best shooters open looks. We have certain players who get open looks, but when you look at their stat sheet, you know why.
We have to be better on perimeter defense. Hopefully our team 3 pt percentage also climbs next year. Those two things alone would make us a bunch more competitive.
I say the old Loyola Marymount style and put up a shot every 8 seconds! Screw defense, screw recruiting a big man and train them like a track team!
My Step-Fathers nephew, Mike Yoest played on that Loyola Marymount team. Love hearing the stories about those teams. Crazy pace up and down the court. Kinda sobering to average almost 18 pts/game and only be the 4th highest scorer on the team. Shoot, run, shoot, run....... Even as their Forward/Center he had the green light to chuck a 3 at any time. Was amazing to watch Corie Gaines shoot the 3, hit over 50% and as a team they hit over 40% of there 3's. Gathers was the only one who couldn't shoot from the outside but he was such a beast in the lane that it was a great compliment to the chuckers. All gas, no brakes with that team.
This cannot be overstated. If your shooters are not a serious threat then any offense can be shutdown. Need more than one to keep defenses honest. Golden State is example of this. The Rockets have three plus this year. Everything works as a result.
Offense in basketball is a pretty simple when you think about it regardless of the offense being run. Can you get open to take shots? When you get open...can you make shots? Winking
