What upgrade would you implement to the MSU Athletic Program? Remember this could be anything....

Other than that a new football stadium. The bottom would be a horseshoe with chariback seating. Followed by two levels of club seats that overhang. With two sections like the current east side sky deck above the club level. The seal builiding would be leveled and rebuilt to expand to the two sides with new locker rooms. A letterman's lounge and a rooftop bar.

... and put in more sky boxes to expand the football stadium to about 75,000. Build it, and they will come.

You fail to realize that any addition isn't to add more seat. That won't be the goal. It will be to add skyboxes and atmosphere...to complete the look of the stadium. Any extra seats will just be a byproduct.

Thinking MSU will draw 75,000 to a football game is one of the most delusional things I have ever seen posted here (and that's saying something).

Considering we have just about the best damn looking natural playing surface in the county, I'm gonna have to go with no.

Secondly, i'll let the immortal words of jack tatum and woody hayes respond:

Woody Hayes: We're going to get astro turf to make our players faster.
Jack Tatum: But won't that make the other teams' players faster too?

Just like the last time we expanded, huh? We built it in 2001, and six years later, they came. For one game.

Due to our installation of the Megatron/MooTube. My dad sat right in front of the guy that does the turf for us at the UK game this year, the first game the Megatron/MooTube was operational. When Turf Guy saw the shadows on the field due to the Megatron/MooTube he said something to the effect of "Oh no, we're in trouble. Those shadows are going to cause big problems for our turf. We use Bermuda grass, and it requires a lot of sunlight." We'll see what happens, but I get the feeling we may be forced into getting field turf because of where we put the Megatron/MooTube.

I seriously hope that doesn't happen. Turf sucks. We have one the best looking fields, if not the best in the country without a doubt, and it would be a damn shame to replace it with turf because we didn't think about a shadow on the field beforehand from the new jumbotron.

I don't know this to be fact and I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think I remember someone on here saying that since the last expansion we have consistently averaged higher in attendance than our previous capacity.</p>

I hope we can find some way to keep our natural grass turf and avoid moving to field turf. But the fact remains Turf Guy says the shadow is going to cause some big problems. My guess is we'll see how it turns out for the '09 season, but if we have problems keeping the field looking good or getting the grass to take off & grow this summer, we could see field turf by '10 or '11. The Megatron/MooTube is a huge deal for Byrne, but he may have 17'd it up with poor placement that causes us to have to move away from our beloved natural grass. And if that happens, the honeymoon will definitely be over for The Ninja. People will be pissed if we're forced into getting field turf.

I guess my question, as someone who is totally uneducated on such matters, is what constitutes "a lot of sunlight?" Eight hours of direct sunlight a day? Four hours?

and the answer is that I'm not entirely sure myself. I'll ask my dad and see what I can find out. I just know that Turf Guy says that Bermuda requires plenty of direct sunlight and the Megatron/MooTube could cause problems getting the Bermuda to take off this summer after they seed the field. You might also find some answers to your direct sunlight question on Wikipedia, but I'm too lazy to link or look it up right now.

There is just no way that the shade for half a day is going to cause us to put in turf. At the very least - our geeks will engineer a new strain of bermuda that is resistant to shade. No way you will ever see turf on that field. We are a %*+$@## ag school.

Furthermore, does the sun not pass directly over the stadium from east to west? I could see if the sun was setting behind the jumbotron (the broad side of which is facing North/South right?), but I think this is total ********.

I'm just repeating what the Turf Guy actually said to my dad when he saw the shadow being cast. I would think he knows a little bit about it.

Someone posted a pic of the field after the entire screen was installed back in the fall and there was huge shadow that extended to about the 30 yard line from the south endzone. However, I have no idea what time that picture was taken.

Edited to add the pic. Again, not sure what time it was taken.

and as best I remember, the shadow was there pretty much all afternoon for both games. This could be a bigger problem than some people want to believe right now.

i think during the first quarter. wasn't it a 1:00 game?

azzurri - the sun doesn't pass directly over the stadium, because the earth doesn't tilt that far. while there will be more direct sunlight and less shadow during the summer, there will still be a shadow. that shadow will start on the west sideline as the sun rises in the east, extend and move across the football field, then finally get smaller on the east sideline as the sun sets. looking at the picture, during the summer, the shadow may not even extend past the back of the end zone.

And you don't expand a stadium that's already not consistently being filled to capacity unless there's another underlying reason to do so.
