If you were to give advice or a truth to your younger self or a fellow human, what would it be?

That’s how student debt happens.
Good grief. It took me 20 years to go from freshman at Penn State to my PhD (1974-1995 with one year off) and it cost me less than $10k out of pocket. You honestly need to tone down your “I know everything” vibe on this board. If you were actually as smart as you pretend to be on this board, you’d have a house in the Hamptons.

Does “I could buy a house in the Hamptons” count. I’ll also add Mr hater that your path 47 years ago is a different path of the teenagers I know 2025. Don’t step to me like that. I don’t dig it at all.

but like my former Puerto Rican VP told me when I told him about PR vaca plans: ‘why would you want to go to Puerto Rico, there’s puerto ricans there.“ (Insert Hampton and New Yorkers)
if we buy a summer home, it’ll be eastern shore

You couldn't afford to "retire" (while still working full-time, of course) in Dumpsterlake, NJ ... no one believes you could afford a summer home.

Unless it was this ... on layaway ...

Didn't your 27-year-old follow your advice, and now he's too poor to live on his own and too poor to own his own car (after you lent him one, and then had to sell it out from under him just to afford your middling new vehicle)? And the other one travelled entirely across the country to get away from you?

BUY BITCOIN. A METRIC CRAP TON OF IT
Be nice. The golden rule is legit
it's SO easy to follow the rules
stop caring about what other people think of you.
Be selective with your partner, and when you find a good one put them first over everything.

I have a few I want to share:

1. Everyone is normal till you get to know them. (Meaning you are no better than anyone else, nor they you)
2. Be the first to smile.
3. Read, Learn, and always keep an open mind, which will allow you to be secure in your convictions.
4. Whatever energy you put out, positive or negative, you'll receive multiple.

Shalom

Something I have said to my daughters. the secret to success in life is choosing to do the things other people don't want to do. Work harder. Love more intensely. sacrifice at a young age to prepare for later in life. Be disciplined. Plan. Exercise your mind and body. We all fail at these simple tasks but they are foundational.

That’s pretty much what the graduate school qualifying exams are, “Can you find the trick?” You best find it quickly. Anybody can do straightforward calculations but really getting to the heart of the subject takes you a long way.

Do all the problems in your mathematics and physics textbooks instead of watching sitcoms. (I myself followed this advice only intermittently.)

This from Rev. Timothy S Healy SJ, former president of Georgetown University: “Don’t be afraid to dream.”
I was thinking of my son in law when I posted this. He did not go to college, has his own contracting business, is following his dream. (He was doing very well working with his dad, but wanted to break away.) He’s the son I never had. @laKavosiey-st lion

A lot of people equate "success" with money and earnings --- don't fall into that trap. I have much more respect for a decent person who is a good spouse and parent than I do for a sleezeball attorney or politician who is thought of as "successful". Be happy, true to yourself, and committed to your family and you will probably be a success (at least in my eyes).

Start investing in tech as soon as you start working. It gives the money longer to grow. 16 yr olds should be investing.
