The more I think about the upcoming playoffs, I’m thinking the new format is actually going to be a good thing.

Round 1 will have some competitive games as well as get rid of numerous teams with decent records who actually aren’t very good.

Better to have a 3-6 team from a great conference than a 7-2 from a brutal conference in the 256.

It also allows the best teams in the state (record wise) 1 week to heal up heading into the start of their round 1 games.

This creates a more competitive 256 team tournament than we usually have.

no?

I think the past two weeks are as good as I can remember for non-conference football with teams not worrying about “the race to 5”. Maybe that didn’t have anything to do with the NC schedule but we’ve had a great start to the year and as long as this format stays…the NC schedules should be awesome.

Only issue is those 7-2 teams from bad conferences are likely to get a bye. The top 16 in each class get a bye and for 8A last year that would have meant a 7-2 West Aurora would get a bye.

It's likely those first round games will be 3-6 or 2-7 teams playing 5-4 teams or possibly a 6-3 with really low playoff points.

The 256 will still be much better.

Also, West Aurora has had some very good teams.

Apparently they had a damn good one last time MS won the championship.
Yes, that was a very good team. They absolutely could have beaten MS that night.

However, that appears to be it. One very good team and a couple respectable would have been a better choice of words.

That's probably the game that led them to believe they needed to go to a more competitive conference.
