I'm just thinking that it would have been helpful for you to understand that the principles that you use to balance your checkbook and buy your six-pack of Keystone Light are a bit different than those underlying the financial structure of large political entities. Perhaps you have not heard, but California is a rather diverse geopolitical region that includes many pockets of great wealth that are relatively unperturbed by the goings on in Sacramento... or Washington for that matter.

For instance, I live in Irvine, CA which is surrounded by Newport Beach, Coto de Caso, Anaheim Hills, Newport Coast, Corona del Mar, and Mission Viejo. The median home price dropped only a fraction of the rest of the country and rebounded quickly enough that within 15 months of the crash, we were back to our original appraised value. San Jose is the primary hub of Silicon Valley is probably in better shape than we are, so I suspect that they can afford top dollar for someone to sell shave ice to the kids at the parks.
There is this perception amongst the great unwashed that California is daily teetering on conflagration. I am sure that we could be in a better situation, but the fact is that most people do not experience it on a day-in day-out basis.
We continually hear that Texas is the "New California" and we are quite happy for them to have the title, so long as we do not have to be the "Old Texas." Far too much is made out of the economic woes of any particular region considering the the reality that the global crisis has much more impact than the inability of the California Assembly to pass a budget on time. If you remember all of the breast beating that went on about New York City's "bankruptcy" during the mid-1970's and the turmoil followed for a decade, you would assume that there was nothing left there but a bottomless hole. The fact is that NYC remains a vibrant, uber-cool place to go.
Finally, if you eschew California and never want to come here, we find some way to soldier on without you. It saddens me mostly because so many of xenophobic nitwits are moving out of the state. Your presence here would likely be an adequate replacement for as many as four or five of our conservative morons. I am sure, however, that Atlanta treasures your intellectual prowess and values the critical edge you bring to the examination of important issues.
