but let's dream big for a minute during the off week.

Suppose we go down to Baton Rouge and beat an LSU team (who looks compeltely beatable after the Auburn game - they have a very crappy QB that our defense can give big problems) and we win the other 11. Best season in school history... rah rah rah.

Who does the Sugar Bowl take? 11-1 MSU, 11-2 UGA, or 11-1 USCe (assuming that UGA beats USCe and loses to Bama in the SECCG and that USCe wins in Baton Rouge too).

By default, doesn't it have to take UGA there?

Yep. In order for us to make a BCS bowl we'd have to be legitimately the second best team in the SEC and have a good enough BCS ranking to make it in, assuming the SEC champion is in the title game.

If you want to get really wooly, week 8 the first BCS rankings come out; so if we can beat UT and UK to go 7-0 we'll be probably top 15, maybe top 10 in the BCS rankings at least for that week.

I agree with you on Florida being a contender in the East... but I was just wanting to start a little discussion on the BCS bowl selection process.

It appears that for us to get a BCS bowl game, we'll need each team in the East to lose 2 games and for Bama to be in the NCG... all of this assuming we go 11-1, which isn't very likely, though it's possible.

This is where preseason polls kill people. Really, they kill people.

All else being equal, the team with the highest preseason ranking wins. The team, who without ever playing a down, who was better than you in the minds of writers who never watched a game..wins.

That would definitely be a good feeling... though short lived.

This Croom documentary that came on last night has really got me to thinking back when I was in school from 2000-2006 and just how awful we were and how amazing it is what Dan has done for our program. If there are 10 better coaches in college football than Dan Mullen, I'd like to see them. He really knows how to run all facets of a program at a very high level.

I've though many times since the Croom days how lucky I was to see the rise of Jackie Sherrill's MSU during my college years. You folks that spent your college years serving the prison sentence that was Sly Croom...I'm really sorry.

When people ask me about

Sly Croom and what he did for our university, I generally reply with "that man stole my best 3 college years from me and then stole two more after that".

From the documentary, I was actually appalled that Saban called him a good coach. Of all the people who know how awful Croom was, Saban should be one of them. Maybe he's still pissed about that 2007 loss.

I think I heard yesterday that if you are top 6 or 8 (can't remember which) in the final BCS rankings you are guaranteed a BCS bowl and to be considered as an at large you have to be top 12. I know BCS 1 and 2 play for the national title game so that leaves 8 more spots to fill. If it is top 6 guaranteed then that is 4 AQ and 4 at large births assuming some team from an AQ conference wins their conference but is not top 8 BCS...I'm looking at you Big East. I am not sure an 11-1 MSU would be top 6 in the BCS standings and here is why. LSU plays Alabama the week before us and assuming they lose they would no longer be ranked top 5 so us beating them would not look as impressive. We play Alabama the week before we play LSU so if we lose to them then we lose our good ranking and probably fall from an estimated 15-18 to 23-25. Beating LSU would put us back around 15 again. I think the only way we play for a BCS this year is have our only loss in the SECCG. Otherwise we will not have the ranking to be considered. This is a season we would have needed to play LSU early on and beat them so that they would then have the rest of the season to get their rank elevated again.

Pretty sure there is a rule that no more than 2 teams from the same conference can be in a BCS bowl in the same year.

yeah, you're geting ahead of yourself

as nice as it is to think about while everything is going good, it's just too early for me to get that far ahead of myself. if we look really good against tn, and go into alabama 7-0...then, and only then, we'll i start looking at those types of scenarios. if we were to upset bama or lsu (and i'm definitely not predicting either of those) then i'd need a full-time shepard to shear all the wool i'd have.

it's just too early. we've won, but we've also looked suspect.

Might turn out to be the winningest 4 years in school history

I was thinking Saturday that the junior/senior class probably doesn't even realize how good they have it today compared to most of us who suffered through 4 years of losing. I looked in the record book and the best 4 year period, in terms of wins, was 1939-1943, with 34, followed by 1997-2000 with 33. 2010-present has given us 20 so far. So, 15-7 (assuming 13 game schedules) over the rest of this year and next makes this the winningest 4 year period in school history.

I, on the other hand, witnessed a grand total of 15 wins during my 4 years (1987-90). Thanks Rocky. Even Sly put up more wins than that.

What if we go 13-0 and have a National Championship matchup vs Bama lined up and then the Mayans are right?

This x1,000,000

I was there for '98, '99, & '00...three of the best years ever. I remember coming back while Croom held us hostage and wondering what had happened. So thankful for Byrne, Mullen, Stricklin, etc.

If I remember correctly, the SEC had 3 teams in BCS Bowls last year - Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas. Maybe I'm just remembering wrongly.

On the other hand, if by "no more than 2 teams from the same conference can be in a BCS bowl in the same year" you mean in the same game; then that's self-evident.

Nope...Arkansas was in the Sugar in 2010 season. They played in the Cotton Bowl last season.
