I'm glad we won that game

Northwestern State won 36 games last year, and they took two of three from BYU. Don't think they made a regional, but they're one of the better non-conference teams we play this year for sure. I thought they were the best team that we've played so far. Rice better hope that they aren't on their schedule. Still not all that great of a team, but a decent mid-major.

I thought Kendall Graveman pitched pretty well. The second run he gave up wasn't his fault. We over-extended him and Busby a little bit- that tells me don't quite have the pitching depth we need, but there is also no doubt that we're getting better. It's good to see that we're headed in the right direction on that front. Pollerena and Caleb Reed pitched really well. Looks to me like Reed is making a strong case to be the closer. We didn't walk very many guys, and we got them to hit a lot of balls on the ground.

Offensively, I thought we hit too many balls in the air. If we do that, we're going to have a hard time. We have to focus on hitting line drives. Just about every hit we had was either on a line drive or a bunt single. Speaking of- we have done a great job of bunting this year. There haven't been very many times where we didn't get the ball down on the ground, and we've beat our share out- even when the other team knows that we're going to bunt. Mostly good at bats- we're good at making contact, although Wes Thigpen and I think Nick Vickerson got caught looking to strike out on a pitches that they should have at least swung at. We had five guys get hit by a pitch- mainly because their second pitcher had no idea where he was throwing the ball. I wonder why the umpire warned the pitcher after he hit Daryl Norris in the head with the bases loaded- I highly doubt he was head hunting in that situation with his team behind and the bases loaded.

Jonathan Ogden bunted a ball to first base when he really needed to bunt it to third base. We are very lucky that Daryl Norris wasn't thrown out at the plate and that the catcher dropped the ball. Ogden needs to bunt that ball to third so that his only play is to go to first or try to make an incredible play to get the runner at the plate- which is something that the third baseman wouldn't be likely to pull off.

Ogden also made a mistake getting thrown out at third to end the inning. If you're going to run in that situation, you better make it. It also didn't help that there was a left handed hitter at the plate- making it easier for the catcher, and I couldn't really tell on M2M, but I don't think he got a great jump either. I don't mind trying to steal third with two outs, but again, if you're going to do it, you better make it. And I would never try it with a left hand hitter at the plate.

The defense was very good once again. Vickerson's error was on a tough play- but they scored it correctly. If he gloves it, and gets the throw off cleanly, I think they would have scored it a hit. But he couldn't get a handle on it. The worst play to me was when we didn't cover second after a single and allowed one of their runners to move up a base to get into scoring position, and he later scored on a sac fly to tie the game. I think Ogden was the one who was supposed ot cover the base in that situation- it could have been Vickerson though. Jaron kind of misplayed a ball that was over his head, but what I want to know was where was CT to back him up? The ball could have been hit a farther to CT's left than I am thinking though- hard to tell on M2M. Brent Brownlee made an awesome catch in right field that was a big key to the game. Kendall Graveman made a great play to throw the lead runner out at third on a bunt and then got a double play ball to get out of the third inning, and those were two huge plays.

Overall, I thought we played pretty well, but we have some things that we need to clean up. We manufactured runs and it was good to find a way to win without throwing one of our top starters.

Thigpen watching strikes fly by with the bases juiced is unacceptable and I assume his *** is a little sore after the chewing he hopefully received.

Our one error was a tough ball to handle and it is going to happen from time to time.

Overall I thought we looked ok but a little more sloppy than we did this past weekend. Pitching is going to hurt us again this year, the only question is how bad.

As far as all the pop ups, I found that odd but this time of year, I am liking us just putting the ball in play as consistently as we are. This is a best team that Cohen has had since he has been here but I am afraid we are still a year or two away from post season play.

As far as postseason play, I think we're good enough to get on the bubble. We really can't afford to lose any of our non-conference games. Maybe Lamar is better than I thought- their win today will help us out a little bit.

The Governor's Cup and also USM and South Alabama are games that would be big keys for us to win.

Our SEC games will be huge as well. Most of our more difficult SEC opponents have to come to Starkville- I think that's something that is in our favor. I think we can win the UT and UGA series on the road.

Our schedule is going to get pretty spread out once we get to SEC play- that's going to help our pitching out a LOT. It's going to make our bullpen a little bit more deeper and it will allow them to rest a little bit more. The only quality opponents that we play non-conference during that period are Ole Miss, USM, Memphis, and South Alabama. And then we have two SWAC teams- and those are the only non-conference games we play during SEC play.

Maybe I didn't pay attention last year but it seems like we are getting every runner over on a bunt and I like it. Use to Polk ball I guess. From the view from center, your assessment Todd, on how fast we are, is spot on

He was better than Statz, and at least as good as Girodo against a better opponent. The Sunday spot is going to be hashed out all pre-conference play.

I've also heard that Busby might get a look on Sunday- although I definately think he is better coming out of the bullpen.

I'm starting to wonder if when SEC play rolls around if we're going to use Girodo on Sundays against a team that is more left handed hitting and Graveman more agiainst right handed hitting teams. I see very little difference between the two, but the biggest problem with the two of them is I don't know that they are guys that are going to go deep into games. That's going to put more pressure on Stratton and Devin Jones because we are going to need to save our bullpen for Sunday as much as we can.

I feel pretty comfortable with Daryl Norris, Evan Mitchell, Caleb Reed, Luis Pollerena, and Andrew Busby coming out of the bullpen right now, though. Plus, we'll have whoever doesn't start between Graveman and Girodo as well. And then Statz might help us out of the bullpen as well. And then we have Hunter Renfroe who can close games out as well. I also would look for Ben Bracewell to come back pretty soon- that will help out a lot as well. CC Watson can help us out in some spots as well- but I would like for him to take this year and heal and get better. I thought he looked good on Sunday.

to me is shaping up to be a middle relief guy. He breezed through the lineup the first time on Saturday, but started to gethit pretty hard the second.

Me, I am excited right now. I guess I look back at the past couple of years where we may have already dropped a game or two to teams we shouldn't have. I know it is early, but it just seems like we are definately playing better this year so far than in the past couple of years. I am not a baseball guru, but I follow Mississippi State Basebal because I know it has been one of our strong sports teams in years past, and because it's Mississippi State Baseball. Hopefully we can just play consistent good ball, and not have a lot of unforced errors, that is the thing that kills me is when we do it to ourselves.

From what I have seen so far, we don't have the pitching to pitch 3 good games against SEC teams, much less the pitching to compete in midweek games against decent teams.

I hope that I am very wrong but that is my concern. We seem to have some guys that are sharp for 1-2 innings but start to be hit pretty well after an inning or so. I expect those guys to get shelled against decent teams.

I agree with you that we have the talent as far as bats and defense to be a bubble team but we are going to have to improve with our pitching to even scare post season play.

My hope is that we can end up around 18-2 or 17-3 through these first 20 games and that our younger pitchers get enough innings that someone seperates himself from the rest to be our Sunday guy.

It will be interesting to see what Cohen does when SEC plays rolls around. Do you throw Stratton on Friday or hold him until Saturday (which I think is what Cohen did last year)?

Thanks for the updates yesterday weblow.

...he needs to be a solid Friday night guy. If he can do that, we've got a chance to win some weekends. If all we have is Stratton, it will be very similar to last year.

I think it is a mental thing with Jones. He's got to keep his composure and not blow up when he gives up a walk or a hit.

do you expect Routt to be healthy anytime soon? I mean could he at least pitch some mid week games?

I think the only midweek games he will pitch in are against SWAC teams- and even that may be generous at this point.

It's much more likely that he is done for the year, and maybe even with baseball.

We'll see if Devin Jones can build on his last start.

But, if Devin and/or Stratton go down, we're going to be in big trouble.

but we're also not going to ask our Sunday guy to go deep into games. We're just going to tell them to get through 3-5 innings and then turn it over to the bullpen.

Personally, I would give Daryl Norris a shot at the Sunday job.

Matthew Stevens sent a tweet that looked like Bradford got plunked in the noggin, too.
did both get hit in the head?
maybe that was why he got a warning?

...Devin's got to be solid. We already don't have a Sunday guy. We can't afford a weekend arm to not perform (or go down to injury). Our lineup won't matter if we're horrible on the mound again.

Out of all the things over the weekend, Devin's performance gives me the most hope. If he can keep that up, we'll show improvement this year and make a regional.

Todd, why do you say this about being with baseball altogether? did he get reinjured this year? Or is this still from last season? Dammit this is painful news to hear... <div>
</div><div>I love Cohen, but this is frustrating and adds merit to those who were pissed about him overusing pitchers early in their careers and ruining them..</div>

The issue is pain after he throws an outing. The bottom line is he's not tolerating it.

If it's hurting him that bad, he will probably quit at some point. And that's speculation on my part.

I hope he comes back, but I'm getting more and more doubtful about it everyday.

I don't think he really got hit all that good- they didn't even have to bring the trainer out.

And CT took a hanging curveball off the top of his head- didn't have to bring the trainer out for that one either.
