he will have been their first choice the entire time, they had to wait on him to finish up the season elsewhere, its the only job he would have pursued other than the one he had, he has always heard great things about the traditions, the Square, the Grove etc etc,.

Auburn w/ Cheezits is the ONLY hire I ever remember where the coach wasn't the darling of the masses at the podium the 1st day. Wonder who that guy was that was @ the Auburn airport hollering "we want a real coach"?

Maybe our first realistic choice, but never will we get our actual first choice.

That's why you use the search firms, so you don't go chasing rabbits, and you've got a realistic list to work with. In that case, the guy we hire WILL be our first realistic choice, but it'll come after our long list was cut by a firm who found out that some of the people on our long list said no thanks. Some of those that said no would likely have been ranked higher on our list, some lower.

You are correct though, that PR wise, you have to at least sell it as the guy you wanted the most after going through the process. Very rarely is a hire met with anger and resentment.

I think we would set our sites on more realistic possibilities like Hudspeth.

who was running his own search firm back when Dan was hired. Neinas is now the Big 12 commissioner. Every school uses a search firm now, it allows the prospective coaches to say they have not been contacted by such and such school.

Hint: You don't, and neither do I at this point.

After this is over, I may be able to get some information on who all we had on our list, if we had a preference order, and what all happened with the process, but right now, no one other than the two heading the committee know exactly who we had on our list and who was contacted by the search firm.

You're pulling names from message boards. If you're going to do that, you could say that Jeff Fisher, Bill Cowher, Kent Austin, and Bobby Hall were at the top of our list as well.

that particular Friday. I have a feeling we were a lot closer than you ever got to any of the big names mentioned in your coaching search this year.
