but my God these tonight have cost us at least 2 runs. So has our lack of being able to get a bunt down though, so I'll shut up. If we hang on to win, it will show some mental toughness...bc I would have been so pissed after a few of those calls it would have probably taken me out of the game mentally. Need a big 2 out hit right here

It sort of looked like his lead leg on the slide was up and didn't actually hit the bag. Hard to see even from the replays, though.

....and that doesn't make me an expert. I learned on here the other day that I've held a rule in my head wrong all my life. Glad it's never come up in a game.

But as far as last night goes? The out at second is excusable. He was probably safe, but it was a bang-bang play. Mistakes happen and it's always tougher making that call when a guy slides in. The knee stuck out might have been out of the umps view if he was set up on the other side of the catcher.

But the balk? To miss that is absolutely egregious. It was absolutely blatant and everybody in the stadium saw it.

Agree about the call at 2nd. It was a close play and he may have been safe but as an ump you've got to make the call immediately and stick to your guns like you're 100% sure it was the right call...

The knee thing was a two part issue for me... First, he intentionally tried to get hit, which is ******, but as you said, from his view point the ump may not have seen it. The part that got me was that the pitch looked like a strike. In fact, I originally thought he called the guy out on strikes. If it's that close to a strike, there's no way his body wasn't in the strike zone.

But the balk was ridiculous... the guy kicked his leg forward then threw over to first... Balk, for me at least, are normally hard to spot in real time. That was one of the most obvious balks I've ever seen.

A bad call would have taken you out of the game mentally???? After you turn 10 years old that shouldn't have been a problem.

I thought the ump was ringing him up after being hit with strike 3.

up and down and yelling at every pitch thrown by Wahl with men on base. He gets in the stretch, stands up and comes set then lifts his lead leg, takes a short step towards home, comes set again then pitches. They called a balk on the reliever that game but never called one on Wahl.

If you have M2M, check out the video around the 1:20 mark. His stretch move is like this every time there isa base runner.
http://www.hailstate.com/mediaPortal/player.dbml?&db_oem_id=16800&id=874523&DB_MENU_ID=&SPSID=90858&SPID=10993&DB_OEM_ID=16800

Just scanned the rule book and found these 2 things about Wahl's motion:
SECTION3.c.4: The pitcher may not prematurely flex either leg before stepping
directly and throwing to first base.
This makes it sound like it is not a balk since he is going to the plate and not to first. Seems like with this rule though that Wahl would be easy to steal on since he does flex his lead leg before every throw home. When you see the flex, run.

SECTION3.g: Failing to throw to the batter immediately after making any motion with
any part of the body such as the pitcher habitually uses in the delivery
This is where the balk comes in. He makes a small step towards home, stops and becomes set, then steps again and pitches. His foot is on the rubber the whole time.
