I received an email from a former HS classmate this morning about the game last night. Her son is in the OM band. It was his first trip but it was not a pleasant one and that wasn't b/c of the loss to us. The band had to be escorted by police and left in block formation with the guys on the outside protecting the girls. This young man said the band was spit on, cussed at, and he had a bruise on his hip from a cowbell. He also said that a female band member had beer poured on her. He said they were terrified. My former HS classmate was furious and rightfully so. Put yourself in her shoes.

This is UNACCEPTABLE behavior...sorry folks...Unacceptable. We won the game. We should have let them go home in peace. They already felt bad enough. No college kids serving in a support group for their university should be scared going to an opponent's territory. They should be treated with respect. I can see this happening at LSU but NOT at Mississippi State.
We are not world beaters for crying out loud. We finished 6-6 and will be going to a subpar bowl. Yes I am happy we are going to a bowl but we should not treat opposing fans this way...RIDICULOUS!!!

agree it should never happen. You hear the same stories from when our fans visit there too though.

I was one of the last few to file out by their band. I stood there watching the goings on on the field and what not until the end. The file out by the band was very peaceful. I saw nar a word said in their direction for any reportable incidences. Admittedly, I cant report on any goings on outside of the stadium. But as for inside the stadium, nothing went down.

/The ONLY thing I saw of any note was the ENTIRE band booing us as we carried the Egg around the field.
//I had no issue with that

... because I've got horror stories that are almost identical from my experiences in Oxford at Eggbowls... The thing is, stories like this come out EVERY YEAR. Any time the visiting team loses they seem to be more prevalent. And they're always "They were assaulting the girls/elderly/small children/homeless puppies...!!111!!11!!!!111!!!!!!!!1"

Look, I have no doubt some nasty **** went down... it always does... but the "victims" in these rivalry incidents almost always exaggerate the actual events.

I witnessed 50 OM fans beat the ever loving **** out of a State fan, I had beer thrown on me, OM fans shoving "the bird" in my face to and from the stadium, told by the elderly OM fan sitting next to me to 17 off when I offered to help him step down in to his seat, and told "I hope you die ina car wreck driving back to the farm.". I took my Hotty Toddy clad sister in law with me to the game and aside from being annoyed by the cowbells, she had nothing but good to say about how State fans she encountered treated her.

You're so simple.

She wasn't there. She's taking the word of a biased, wet and heartbroken kid. The information you have is second-hand at best.

I seriously doubt their retreat from the stadium was so organized that they left in block formation with the guys outside and the girls inside. That doesn't even sound like it's remotely true. Yet, you believe it. And don't need proof. Just because she said it. That's ridiculous.

You people who believe everything your so-called friends say are hilarious to me.

there are stories running rampant this morning about how fans, football players and now band members were terrorized by MS State fans. This is getting rediculous. Where is all the proof that this happened. I see a lot of sour grapes on the part of Ole Mess people here. You got beat last night, leave it at that and stop concocting all these ******** rumors The only sodomization I witnessed was to the Ole Mess football team and they deserved it for dancing on our logo.

And they taunted us, yelled at us, etc. Never any violence that I'm aware of, but we were treated worse by the fans in Oxford than we were by the fans in Baton Rouge.<div>
</div><div>I wouldn't be surprised if a few of our fans did the same kind of stuff to their band, but I HIGHLY doubt a girl in the Ole Miss band got assaulted by a cowbell...</div>

I've seen the picture via somebody's tweet.

I've tried to post the link here, but can't get it to work.

that they would not be held responsible for what happened in Oxford.

I'd like to see an agreement between both schools to do a better job of segregating fan bases, bands, players coahes and refs.

I've driven ref's out of Scott field before when we won and the few opposing fans who watched their team lose posed a serious threat to the ref's. They were scared out of their minds.

</p>It's serious business in Mississippi and for some the only identity left to celebrate is their allegiance to the team:

"If college football is truly allegorical, then here is the title of its harshest lesson: Ole Miss vs. Mis'ippi State.
It is perhaps the saddest rivalry in all of Division I, a struggle for
pride in a state where pride comes hard, then runs too deep and stays
too long.</p>

"Poor old whupped-down Mis'ippi" is what the writer Willie
Morris calls his home state. "The last people you want to take a
whuppin' from is somebody else from Mis'ippi," says comedian Jerry
Clower, a former Mis'ippi State player."</p>

Can anyone explain to me why there isn't any video or pics of all these damn cowbell attacks. No vid or pics of the Ole Miss band using block formation to escape the stadium? Every cell phone these days is capable of shooting video and taking damn good pictures...why isn't there proof of these attacks? Now more than ever, the phrase "pics or it didn't happen" is true.

need them to deflect frustration.

Worst I ever saw at one of these games was a fat ole miss kid who stuck a flag in my dad's face in 1978. It was just a kid acting like a kid. But it has stuck with me for the last 33 years.

All of our skin is a bit thin outside the stadium after a loss.

I was able to go back and make peace with the kid years later by helping get that very same flag pulled out of his rectum. </p>

and the fact that it was getting harder after the game was over, all I and 99% of the rest of the people in that stadium wanted to do was find someplace warm and dry. I doubt anybody stayed around to purposely harass OM fans, band, football team

that is standard protocol. Doesn't matter if you are playing Ole Miss or at Southern Baptist Seminary.

I will say this- you would not believe what people say to band members. It's like the opposing fans think that we actually had an effect on the outcome of the game. Usually, it's stupid stuff.

I know when I went to Oxford with the band, we got flipped off, cussed at, etc. Actually it wasn't as bad as LSU. But they're hardly angels. Heck, I remember in 1996, our bus was driving down frat row there and they started throwing beer bottles at our bus. I laughed at them and gave them the finger since we had won. Great memories.

The band had to be escorted by police and left in block formation with the guys on the outside protecting the girls.
Also brass players removed their mouthpieces if they were on the outside of each rank because someone had his stolen once while marching into the stadium and he never got it back.

When you put on that band uniform you represent your university and you'd better represent it with class. In the FMB Ms. Lance made damn sure that we knew we were never to respond to any fan insulting us. It's annoying because as a bandmember you can't get up and leave and you can't respond, but that's life. Suck it up. To me the most annoying fans actually weren't in Oxford, they were in Little Rock and Baton Rouge. Never had a problem leaving the stadium, though, especially since we usually had a police escort and had to wait until most of the fans had cleared out anyway. My personal experience of too many years in the FMB makes me highly doubt this story.

after the game was over. There was Security next to the A/B portal all night but I never once saw anyone taunt their band before, during or after the game. Like I said, I only stayed 10 min after the game but I call BS on any of that happening inside the stadium. Before the game or 10 min after, I cannot comment. </p>

mean they were so pathetic that our coach had mercy on them the whole second half. In fact, the second half was as boring of an egg bowl as I can remember. I didn't even really feel the hatred coming through as much as usual. Maybe it was just me.
