Yeah, I don't like Bama, but I do admire Saban. He is badass. The man has so many blitzes, he names after states and ran out of states and had to start naming them after US territories like Guam and Puerto Rico. The man cusses on his coaches show, tells reporters that questions piss him off, and as Jimmy Johnson (or Barry Switzer) said today, the man isn't afraid to walk in the shadow of Bear Bryant.
But tonight, I had to scoff at Bama's claim in their fight song to be "The Pride of Dixie". I expected Saban to come in and ransack this Mountain West team, and instead, he looked as lost as Croom.
He let us all down by not having his team prepared (How did THAT happen?). Bama isn't back quite yet. They need a few more playmakers on offense. They also need to learn how to win a BCS game, heck they just learned how to win the Iron Bowl this year.
Normally I want our SEC partners to lose, but it's not good for us as a conference to lose to a non-BCS team like that.
The good news is, Saban apparently has a LOT of trouble against an Urban Meyer style spread team, for whatever reason. When he went to zone, Utah's receivers found the spaced in between. When they went to man, it slowed them down for a little while, but Utah adjusted. I don't think it's a coincidence that their only two losses were to Florida and Utah. The other good news for us is that unlike a lot of spread teams (cough, TexasTech, cough) I think we're going to have a good defense. What I wouldn't give for a Joe Lee Dunn circa 1996 before everyone figured out his hand signals. Maybe we saw a preview of things to come.
