I think it's the cool thing to say, but I don't believe it. Don't get me wrong. I think Houston has an awesome passing attack and I think our secondary has gaping holes. However, I think our defense to this point has been calibrated to stop the run. We've allowed many many downfield completions this year, but most of them have been into single coverage, many times a single coverage by a safety. And not because a CB got beat, but rather because a CB was playing a shallow zone to support the run. And on the other side of the coin, some say our corners play too far off of the WRs. I say they sometimes have to because we often stack our safetys in the box and have to give some cushion. So here's why Houston will have good, but not great passing numbers against us and put all of this 700+ yards, woe is us talk to bed.
1. Our D-line will pin its ears back and put Keenum under pressure.
2. Zach Smith will blitz his *** off and put himself back in our good graces.
3. Our run offense will control the clock and limit the amount of time Keenum is on the field.
4. Houston seems to make its living off of short pass and yac, not the downfield pass that has been so tough on us.
5. A lot of internet morons base their understanding of a team's ability to defend the pass on the quality of players in the secondary. I think scheme is just as important, and unlike our gameplan against AU, LSU, and GT, which was based soley around taking away the run game and forcing questionable QBs to beat us through the air (which they did), our gameplan will be all about stopping the passing game, and we will be vulnerable to running plays, particularly draws.
Again, Houston will get their yards. I can definitely see 350-450 yards passing. But, at the end of the day, all of this hyperbole about how very bad our pass defense is will be scaled back a bit.
Thanks for listening.
