I'm saying it right now. Houston will not 'pass all over us.'

I think it's the cool thing to say, but I don't believe it. Don't get me wrong. I think Houston has an awesome passing attack and I think our secondary has gaping holes. However, I think our defense to this point has been calibrated to stop the run. We've allowed many many downfield completions this year, but most of them have been into single coverage, many times a single coverage by a safety. And not because a CB got beat, but rather because a CB was playing a shallow zone to support the run. And on the other side of the coin, some say our corners play too far off of the WRs. I say they sometimes have to because we often stack our safetys in the box and have to give some cushion. So here's why Houston will have good, but not great passing numbers against us and put all of this 700+ yards, woe is us talk to bed.

1. Our D-line will pin its ears back and put Keenum under pressure.
2. Zach Smith will blitz his *** off and put himself back in our good graces.
3. Our run offense will control the clock and limit the amount of time Keenum is on the field.
4. Houston seems to make its living off of short pass and yac, not the downfield pass that has been so tough on us.
5. A lot of internet morons base their understanding of a team's ability to defend the pass on the quality of players in the secondary. I think scheme is just as important, and unlike our gameplan against AU, LSU, and GT, which was based soley around taking away the run game and forcing questionable QBs to beat us through the air (which they did), our gameplan will be all about stopping the passing game, and we will be vulnerable to running plays, particularly draws.

Again, Houston will get their yards. I can definitely see 350-450 yards passing. But, at the end of the day, all of this hyperbole about how very bad our pass defense is will be scaled back a bit.

Thanks for listening.

1) Early pressure

2) Tight coverage

3) Tackle on contact.

If you can do that you will be somewhat successful.

I think it's the logical thing to say.

I disagree because I think the problem is Carl Torbush has yet to show, and I have no reason to believe at this point that he will, that he can defend an unconventional offense. By unconventional, I mean anything that's not very similar to a pro style offense for the most part. The only exception being a JSU team that was QB by the legendary Tray Rutland. UH does not run a conventional offense at all.

Some of the things you said may very well happen, and I don't doubt your research about UH and their YAC, but if I was a coach for UH, and I saw the MSU secondary on film, you better believe that I would be looking to take some chances deep, even if it isn't my teams M.O. Remember, throwing wasn't GT's M.O. either. Especially knowing that MSU has an offense that's probably going to put some points up on the board against my defense.

These past two games turnovers killed us. Killed our momentum, kept the D out there to long and we got exposed because of it.

You say TTech won't pass all over us but as you stated if they put up 400 yard passing this = passing all over us.

Looking at status, Houston is one of the top passing team in the nation while also having one of the worst rush defenses. This tells me time of possession doesn't limit their passing offense.

What the 17? You're predicting that we give up 450 yards passing and people will dial back the criticism? Are folks expecting us to give up 700 yds?

I think we will give them a steady dose of Dixon, Elliot, and Relf.....I predict 55-60 total carries between the three, with 300 yds rushing.....and, for only the second time this year, I predict we win, 38-35....

our running game slows their offense down..... AND.....Anthony Dixon is the first player to ever become offensive and defensive player of the game....

If he has to throw the ball 76 times like they did the other night, I would think 350 would be pretty good.
350/76=4.6 yards per attempt

it's going to be a long, long, long game for us and our defense. Also, GA Tech got 260 yards on only 14 passes with a bad passing QB. No way any team with a halfway decent passer is going to average 5 yards per attempt against us.

against OSU (4) and TT (2), UH won the TO battle in both of those games. I think we can win IF we hold onto the darn ball.

...that I'm not that hung up on the total number of yards because I think their passing game will basically be their offense. I don't think they'll run it effectively. So if that's all of their offense, we aren't gonna be too terribly bad off. Not good, but not screwed either.

That's what we had to do with GT. They were a run team and a very damn good run team and we had to commit to stopping it. If they threw the ball then they threw it our DB's did not have any help from the DL. I don't blame our DC for that, hell GT has not been a passing team all year. This week is different and I agree with the top poster, we will do better against the pass due to them being a passing team.

This will still be a shoot out and if we do not fumble we will win.

If we can get pressure with our front 4, we got a chance. Obviously we've got to blitz also, but McPhee & others have to get after Keenum early and often. I think the performance of our D-line is more important than our secondary... we know the secondary sucks, so it's up to the guys up front to not give UH time to throw.

Coach34, Houston is averaging 446 ypg passing. That's good for #1 in the nation. If they fall within my 350-450 yard window this weekend, we will have done better than average against them. Texas Tech and Oklahoma State both fell within that window, so I guess they got "passed all over" by Houston. All I'm saying is that we will be no worse than average against them. Meanwhile, half of you are claiming they are going to set the NCAA passing record against us. No they're not.
