and our mascot (at the time) became the Aggies before TAMU (I think only by a year or two). <div>
</div><div>Both our schools have very rich military traditions and a lot of our old traditions matched up with theirs. We used to have "yell practice" the night before games, our marching bands were composed of ROTC groups, and we both are land grant institutions (and they also have a drill field, as well... just theirs is not in the center of campus... they still use it for drills). After WWII, we moved away from some of the military traditions in the hopes of a fresh "new" look (this is about the time we changed our name to Mississippi State University from State College and the Bulldogs replaced the Maroons as our mascot).</div><div>
</div><div>A lot of the old land grant schools were modeled after Miss. A & M, Including TAMU, Clemson, and I believe Auburn... long before the SEC existed. General Lee was credited for a lot of that because he built a strong foundation in the late 1800s. Pretty neat stuff when you look into it. </div><div>
</div><div>And, no, TAMU does not use cowbells. They have one of the neatest fight songs in college football, though. I can't embed, but here is the link:</div><div>
