And I do think that public / media backlash does have to be a small concern, but that being said, this is possibly the defining moment of his future as an athletic director, let alone MSU's athletic director ( & as of right now, I hope we can keep him for many years to come).

I really liked the way that he handled the Ron Polk situation & hiring of Cohen, I especially liked the fact that he refused to respond to Polk's tirades in the media, that in & of itself established his leadership of the department....

I think it could go something like this:

"We are disheartened to announce that MSU has choosen to release Sly Croom of the head football coaching posistion here at MSU. MSU, it's almni, & fans desire to be competitive on the football field, & consistantly field winning teams that are capable of challenging for the SEC West, & being in a position to compete for an SEC title. It is my pleasure to announce, that as of today, we are conducting a national search to locate the individual that will assist us in achieving these goals. We will be announcing our new head coach in a press conference in 2 weeks, Thank you, & I will look forward to seeing you then."

Plain & simple, make it happen, & get the job done......how hard is that.

edited for spelling

If we get backlash for firing a coach with a 30% winning percentage and the worst offense in college football over a FIVE YEAR PERIOD, then we just may as well go Div I-AA. We NEED to fire this idiot and say F YOU to the ACLU, ESPN, CBS, or whoever wants to complain about us firing a "fine man". We've been a whipping boy for 50+ years and if we EVER want to shed that, our AD, FANS, ALUMNI, and athletic department need to grow a collective set of balls and make a goddamn decision that will BENEFIT the program. We need to make a REAL HIRE, not some washed up, recycled has been that nobody else is talking about.

I strongly believe that there are other coaches out there w/ character that can produce a winning team.

We can't control the media & such, but we can control MSU & it's future, & that is what we have to do.

The media is already well aware that Croom is on the hot seat. This much gets press. Missing from that press are any accusations suggesting it would be racist to fire Croom. So relax because racism is not an issue here and everybody from Maine to Hawaii understands that.

I saw Pat Forde's article last week where he named 10 coaches on the hot seat, and listed several more that could be on the list and Sly Crooms was nowhere to be found. That list included names like Tuberville, Kirk Ferentz, Willingham (of course) and others, but not one single mention of the worst coach in the SEC.

Yea and any idiots that want to break the whole "they didn't let him do his job" story can sit beside the phone with him and listen to the silence and their credibility disappear.

I agree w/ you, & I probably shouldn't even acknowledge any race implications that could arise, but I keep thinking of that section of the MSU fanbase that will cry about worrying what will be said in the press, & that can't be our concern. What's best for the MSU football program should be our only concern

And this was probably after we beat Vandy. On that one site they post every week we were in the top 10 for coaches on the hot seat then we beat vandy and crxxm dropped into the 40s or 50s. He will be back in the top 10 this week
