In light of Quay's commitment, should Dan leave, how about this coaching arrangment?

If Dan bolts and we bring in a new HC, there's no guarantee they'd want to retain the old staff. Quay seems to be extremely fond of Wilson, as are many of our other recruits both this year and last. So for the sake of continuity and to keep our class from falling apart, what if we named Chris Wilson interim HC for 2012 in the event that Dan leaves?

Obviously if Dan leaves, he would likely take Hevesy and Sallach for certain, maybe even Mirando and who knows about Koenning. Hopefully we could hold onto Greg Knox, as he's been doing well out on the recruiting trail for us, but we'd likely need to go out and fill a few voids on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, we'd likely promote Geoff Collins to DC to fill that void and hopefully the remainder of the defensive staff would likely stay on board as well.

The players would probably be motivated to play their asses off for Wilson next year and if he held his own in 2012 and got us to at least 6-6 and a bowl, then remove the interim title and let him make whatever staff changes he'd like to.

Another thing to consider is the effect that Dan leaving could have on
Cox/Banks decision to return or not. If they are tight with Wilson,
and feel that an entirely new coaching staff is going to be brought in, that may
make their decision to leave pretty easy. However, if they know the
defensive scheme won't change next season, perhaps they'd be more apt to stick around and play for Wilson?

Why do people have to start 69 threads a day about what might happen if our coach who is not leaving leaves?

Not that the commitment would change his mind, but why would he commit if Quay didn't know if Wilson would be there next year or not? Why would a highly regarded recruit commit to a staff without some kind of assurance that the staff would remain in place? I'm assuming that Quay had some horses mouth assurance of the staff's standing come next August.

It would kill our Feb 2013 recruiting for almost a year until Wilson hopefully got the job fulltime in November. And it wouldn't help the Feb 2012 class at all either. Not many players are going to want to sign somewhere without knowing who their coach is going to be. That's why you never let a coach go into a season with only 1 year left on his contract.

Would we really need 14 months to conduct a search? I agree with most of the other comments, this is just a terrible idea. It's nothing against Wilson. If he's the best candidate, give him the job. Interims are for situations like Ohio State and North Carolina had.
