"The formations have changed, but the offense is, dare I say it, Croom-esque. That's why people are clamoring for a QB change. They are tired of not feeling like we can comeback when we get down. They'd like to have an offense that scares defenses, instead of one that lulls them to sleep (see: the entirety of Mississippi State football in my lifetime).
Arkansas showed last night what a good offense will do for you. They took our best shot, got off the mat and knocked us on our backs. That's what I'd like to see from State's offense. Until I do, I won't be satisfied. "

UPig has a 1st round draft pick at QB, and at least 2 more future NFL draft choices at TE and WR...UPig gets WR's open alot because they have a helluva lot of talent...

Look at the best offenses in the SEC-

SC? Has Lattimore and the SEC's best WR in Jeffrey
Georgia? Has a 1st round pick at WR
Alabama? They have the nation's best RB's and a 1st or 2nd round pick in Jones...not mention Maze
Auburn? They have the freaking best player in college football at QB

It takes talent to have an offense like these people...NOBODY on our offense can compare to what these schools have at the skill positions- yet you expect us to be as good...

As far as "Croom'esque"- our offense is 65th in the nation out of 120, playing against the best defenses in the nation- Crooms never made it past 103rd...you are making a dumb statement- we are vastly improved whether you like what we do or not...our offense will get better when we get more talent in it

Florida and Tebow seemed to do quite well with it

Our coaches have done as well as realistically could be expected with the talent that we have on offense.

The only thing Croom-esque about our offense is the players that he left behind, or didn't recruit. People forget that we had a year where that moron didn't sign a QB at all or decided to go with a walk-on at the most important position on the team, and that has really hurt our depth at that position for the past couple of years and now. We won't have four scholarship QB's until Jan. when Dak Prescott comes on board.

We have the Four Horseman o-line that Hevesey has done a pretty good job with, but aside from Sherrod, they're average and slightly undersized by SEC standards. Balis deserves a lot of credit for beefing them up. Then we're starting a freshman in Gabe Jackson, who is pretty darn good and Tobias Smith, who is extremely injury prone.

Croom didn't leave Dan any WR's or RB's either aside from Marcus Green. Dan closed the deal on Bumphis, landed Berry, Chris Smith, Carr, and who knows what Croom would have not done with Arceto. Elliott has been a bust. Dan also landed Ballard- Thank God and Perkins.

Agree with your points. I think the problem is that we were lulled to sleep by the Crooms Coast and when our fans heard "Spread the Fun" they automatically assumed 300 yards passing and 4 TDs every game. The problem is we had a midget, a 1 star QB we stole from the SWAC, and uncertainty that Russell was even going to sign.

We are hurting for a big possession receiver in order to get our speed guys open. Chris Smith showed a bit of that on Saturday, but until we have that, our fly and post patterns are not fooling anybody. Arceto and Bumphis could not separate themselves and both were locked down all night by single coverage. The one time that we went long on the fly, Relf made a good throw, and luckily he even overthrew it by a half yard because Arceto was double covered, and Bumphis was locked down on the sideline.

Arkansas was playing 8 men within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage and we completed 20 passes but only got 225 yards. That just tells you we arelacking playmakers at the TE and WR positions. I don't understand why people don't realize that.

It also wouldn't have hurtto have had a 6'4 outside guy to throw a fade to on our last drive in regulation. Bumphis was on the bench. Smith was banged up. Berry and Green are out. We didn't really have anyone to go to. Mullen thought our best chance wasto bust a run from15 yards out.

That's why I'm excited about Joe Morrow from Ocean Springs, and why I want us to get DeShaun McNeal from Oxford. That's a 6'4" guy and a 6'5" guy. They were telling me on BDJ that we're a lot thinner at DE, but shoot, we moved a DE to WR earlier this year- mainly because the guy was 6'4". We don't need "bodies"- hell, a walk-on is a body- we need players.

We got blitzed to death in the 2nd half. I know we haven't ran them all year pretty much, I'm just wondering if anyone knows why we don't run them more.

but maybe it's bc the poor blocking from our WRs? The times we do run them, it seems like we usually don't get decent blocking from the WRs.

plays in the open field in one on one situations. However, Ole Miss' secondary is equally bad. Should be a good matchup.

he would have been a big weapon when they load up 7 or 8 at the line.

But to call this offense Croomesque is borderline idiotic.

Relf was really missing an experienced WR against Auburn, and there in the 2OT against Arkansas would have been the perfect time to hit Marcus. I think we could have used Relf in the run game a little less if we had Marcus Green, and maybe he catches a pass instead of Relf fumbling. You never know. But I think the gameplan for both teams is different if Marcus Green is out there. Having him next year will be huge for us. We return all our WR's except Berry. Should have a good crew of pass catchers next year.

It is just frustrating to see how limited we are in the passing game, and to think how much better we would be if we were ANY threat to throw the ball at all. Ralph's lack of accuracy AND poor WR play really make it tough on us against quality defenses.

But there's no doubt that...

1. Ralph is the best we have right now. He gives us the best chance to win and we just have to live with his limitations.

...and....

2. This offense is light years ahead of anything Crooms even dreamed of putting on the field. Even when we don't score, 3 and outs are pretty rare. We are able to move the football, make first downs, gain field position, etc. We are pretty good about hanging onto the football most of the time. I don't feel like the offense has been flat out terrible in any games besides Bama and LSU. During the Crooms error, our offense was an absolute embarrassment EVERY game.

To take the next step, we are going to have to develop the ability to make big plays, but that is just going to take upgrading the talent level at QB and WR. Right now, the coaching staff is getting the best out of what they have.

Mullen even said he planned to have lots of production from the tight end position and planned to utilize them a lot this year. Which obviously has not happened, since Marcus has been hurt. Our lack of production and protection from an experienced (good) tight end has been killer in his game plan I believe.

The good thing is that hopefully Marcus will be back to 100% next year and then we have that freshman tight end (whose name is slipping my mind?) that was given praise several times during the year for scout team work. Both of these guys should help us out a ton.

I do think that calling our offense Coom-like is disgraceful to Mullen and his staff.....we are nothing near Croomtastic.......

to argue with you, but even I can't argue you on this one.

it's obvious our offense is a lot better, especially the running game. it's also obvious that Relf and our WRs limit us in the passing game, but our offense is built around the running game. And that's why Relf will start as long as he's here. Cam Newton would be perfect for our offense. Chris Relf would be perfect for it if he could throw withconfidence and accuracy.

StratDawg, I asked Mullen this personally and he said we don't run screens to the RBs (I guess that's the type of screen you're referring to) because that's what drop back passing teams do. If they see Relf just back pedaling, the other D would prolly sniff it out. I think it would prolly work since we never run them, but that's what the man himself told me. Makes sense too.

6-2 or 6-3 220lb Brandon Hill. Hopefully he can be at 230 or 235lbs and be a freak.
