Brad Krayer just called and told me that Croom will be let go after the Ole Miss game unless things change drastically. I really hope he is wrong but thought I would pass it along.

Serious question, if and when you do end up with your next coaching search, do you prefer to go the proven retread route (ex. Tommy Bowden, Rick Neuheisal last year), the up and coming assistant route (Will Muschamp, Jimbo Fisher), or the up and coming small school head coach route (ex. Chris Peterson, Brian Kelly, or a top D-1AA head coach)?

Not asking about those individual coaches, but if you had a choice, which category do you prefer for coaching hires?

To add my opinion, I like the up and coming small school head coach route typically, but we obviously went with the proven re-tread route on our last hire and pretty much went the up and coming assistant route with most of our previous hires.

To keep up with our apparent and unrelenting desire to be exactly like Ole Miss (assuming the Tuberville rumors were true) I vote D - "hire good coach fired by dubmass school with unrealistic expectations".

/

Seriously though, I would most likely want a young big name D1 assistant who's primary focus is on defense (Muschamp?) and let them hire a young up and coming assistant to run the offense - I guess OC would have to come from a small school for the #'s to work.

Yea, if Tubberville does get fired and Byrne doesn't at least make a phone call to Jimmy Sexton about him, then Byrne is an idiot.

Technically though, Tubby would fall under the proven retread category, no matter how stupid his firing was.

Is that what you are calling the Orgeron hire? I thought it was the "holy crap we flew all the way to the west coast to get turned down aGAIN so can we just stop in LA on the way home" hire.

Your description is better, but still it fits the bill of an attempted "up and coming assistant" hire, though apparently Boone and Khayat were the only ones in the country that saw him as an up and coming assistant.

to narrow it down to the best we could hire of all three:

1. Best proven retread out there
2. Best proven Coordinator from a big school
3. Best head coach from a non-BCS program

That should be our final three choices to make the hire from

I think we need to hire a coach who can prepare a good PowerPoint presentation.

5. A head coach who does NOT get fat and happy during a 5 year losing regime.

...that Croom will be back next year regardless of what happens, unless he decides to fall on his on sword by refusing to make some changes that Byrne is going to dictate to him. There will be changes in the coaching staff and changes in philosophy that Croom must agree to.

Byrne has made some significant upgrades to make the gameday experience more enjoyable and the product on the field should be the exclamation point and not the low point of the experience. Fan displeasure, stubborn comments by Croom to the press, and the offensive futility are things that are important to Byrne, and he talks to Croom about those things weekly.

So, the best we can hope for right now is that Croom's stubbornness gets the best of him and he refuses to take marching orders. Otherwise, he'll be back.

Will the "Steamin' Croom" take the place of the "Peepin' Croom"?

I'm going to take a Steamin' Croom...

The best proven coordinator out there from a big school and the best head coach from a non-BCS program would not give MSU the time of day.

And please don't give me the standard sheep answer that, bbbbut it's the SEC.

So is Vanderbilt and they aren't going there either.

a head coach that is making 800,000 would not jump at a chance to make 2 million? Regardless if it is State or not, the increase in pay will attract a lot of coaches coming from a non-BCS or a big-time coordinator.

Jimbo Fisher was a proven OC at LSU and word is he wanted the MSU job 5 years ago for a lot less than we're now paying and when we were looking at an upcoming probation. If he would have taken the job then, I'm pretty sure we could get a proven BCS OC now. Same for getting a small school I-A head coach. No way a guy making $500K at Buffalo (I just pulled a number and a school out of my *** so don't read anything into that) wouldn't at least look very hard at taking a $1,000,000 per year raise for pretty much a guarateed 4 years.

And lose the Vandy ****. It's a hell of a lot easier to win at MSU than it is at Vandy and everybody know that. They haven't won in over 30 years and even with the amazing luck they've had this year, they'll still be hard pressed to win more than 6 games.</p>
