What kind of rec league is that when a ref has had three incidents where his ribs were broken, his leg broken and being beat into a coma? Seriously? Perhaps league officials should have seen a pattern of the league being out of control. That is unreal. Poor guy.
Guy's in a coma and previously had broken ribs and a broken leg from being a soccer ref attacked by players mad about a call.

People get upset about sports, man...

That is a little over-the-top that he has had ribs and a leg broken in the past.

That tells me that he should have been a better referee, or hung up his ref boots after the first two injuries, realizing that he just wasn't cut out to officiate.

ETA: I am not justifying nor condoning this. I do not promote injuring referees in any way.

I've never seen anything like this, but speaking from experience, rec leagues, peewee, and jr. high sports are the absolute hardest to call. Parents think their kids are the next Derek Jeter and the only thing coaches know how to do is yell at officials... all the while, play is so bad you literally have to make calls up (like strikes) to keep from being there all day or to at least keep the game somewhat fair. I'd MUCH rather call a 6A playoff game than recreation or jr. high anything.
