Interesed in the long debate about records, recruiting classes and inheriting players..
Sorry, only have the gumption to use scout.com's recruing rankings for each year for MSU.
Draw your own conclusions.
But tell me whether the idea that using the PREVIOUS TWO recruing classes tells us more about the FOLLOWING season. ie 2002-2003 tells us about 2004 seaons etc. Then think about what that means for next year, and the next.
2004 season...Crooms first year. 3-8...2-6 in sec. average ranking of 2002-2003= 19th.(both Sherrill's classes)Our best 2 year ranking by 7 spots since that time. Want to blame Croom's offense? fine. Probably not far from the truth....just dont forget to explain why the previous recruiting classes from 1998 to 2002 performed so poorly forSherrill. Ncaa investigation? Affected both coaches.
2005 season...Crooms second year. 3-8...1-7 in sec.average ranking of 2003-2004= 40th.(one sherrill class, one croom)Fall from grace recruiting wise. Put a massive amount of doubt in our fans minds whether Croom could recruit at all with that impressive 60th ranking . Of course previous season purging of players like Darren Williams, Burch, and others sort of made folks wonder what the deal was. Bad kids? Bad Coach?Hate to admit it, but thrashing of Orgeron in Egg bowl and that whole soap opera helpeddistract us from a lot of bad stuff.
2006 season....Crooms third year. 3-8....1-7 in sec. average ranking of 2004-2005=49.5. Dear word. but who we beat even makes this make just as much sense that we got worse. We beat Jacksonville state, beat UAB in overtime...and.....Croomed Shula. Lost to Orgeron at UM but beat that *** up and down the field and couldnt cover a punt or hit a field goal. Story of Crooms special teams life.
2007 season....Crooms 4th year. 8-4....4-4 in sec. average ranking of 2005-2006=39. Maybe there is some sense here. You improve by more than 10 spots in recruing average. Meaning the redshirt freshmen are now playing from the 2006 class and therecruits signed in 2005 are redshirt sophmores or true juniors if they played early. beat Bama 2nd yearin a row (always a big hit).Snatched victory from the jaws in the egg bowl (and an indication wewerent nearly as good as our record). Bowl game win.
2008 season...Crooms final year. 4-8....2-6 in sec. average ranking of 2006-2007=33. Another possible indication why the team didnt 'rise up'. Recruiting wise, they just didnt improve that much with 2 39th ranked classes followed by a 27th.Sure. look at the recruiting class after the 2007 season all you want and scratch your head (33rd), but it really didnt mean a thing last year or wouldnthave. We were living on the talent from 2006-2007 and Crooms hard head.
2009 season....Mullen first year...5-7....3-5 in sec. average ranking of 2007-2008 classes=30. See this season probably did have more to do with signing day of 2008 than i've given it credit for. So for the sake of adding that ranking (19th)to the average we come up with....26th . and a new coach with an offensive mind. So I'm not saying records dont matter and we should all betoo confidentfor a better season next year. But the difference in a simple 3-8 year and a 5-7 isnt just the difference in a coach, but in the difference in the rankings of the classes they have to work with quite possibly.
Admit it or not, Croom had a great deal to do with some good players Mullen signed. But what I'm pointing out is even if this class winds up 42nd in the country this year, the average of the previous 2 2008-2009 will be 26. That to me is what shows this class shouldnt get under our skin. This one winds up 42nd. and the previous 3 year average....31st. Still not too bad.

He lays an egg next year after signing class rank # 42 and we could be sliding back into a hole.
This years class is as important as any, but next years would be a killer to screw up
