Been trying to say forever. “Nobody wants to coach here” shows a clear misunderstanding of how this works. Donovan flirted with it AFTER two titles. You’re famous here it’s history it a blue blood. He can walk down the road in Gainesville and nobody stops him. This is why they get into coaching.

Why would anyone think college basketball coaches would turn down one of the only places they’re legitimately famous lol. Some of Our own fans don’t know the power of this place that’s bad.

I would have been ecstatic if we had originally hired Golden. But we didn't. And we just played our best game of the season. Pope is doing a good job this season with all the injuries this team has suffered, its incredible to me people can't see that. We have a good coach, we don't need a replacement
Horse 💩. You call flubbing every recruit progress?

Thats dilusional

The $20 million roster comment was smart a$$.
I don’t care for Golden, and I do believe he did some shady stuff at Florida that was swept under the rug by their admin. My eyes tell me he’s a creep through and through and I trust my gut on these things. I never want him around Lexington.

The chances of Pope winning a title here, much less make a Final Four are slim to none and boosters aren’t going to accept this mediocrity forever. Eventually they’re going to want to bring in a sure fire successful coach and Pope will be kicked to the curb, no amount of parasocialism will save him.

Anyone who paid attention to the last hiring cycle shouldn’t be that surprised. It’s why even though I rule out Oats, May and Pearl in my preferred coach’s list, I still had Golden in there.

Only thing better than Golden to me is if it worked out with Pope. Still hoping this ends up being what I expected going into this year.
Oats would come to Kentucky. He was upset we weren’t going to offer and wanted to attach himself to it. It was for recruiting. Pearl also was probably going to take it. Matt even said he went to sleep thinking it was Pearl. Boosters were all on that. All of these guys would love to be the next guy that brings Kentucky back to prominence. Sometimes they don’t but when that happens it’s either they want the NBA or family ties.

He’s been known to stalk coeds but when you win a championship nobody cares.

Golden first 2 years at UF were

16-17 and
24-12

not sure people would’ve been all over that
He took over a Florida team for Mike White and thats par for the course for a rebuild at that time at a program like that.

Some of you either wont accept this or simply can’t get it. Pope is FIFTY FIVE years old. He’s got a 63% winning percentage. He never even had a tournament resume until last season lol. He’s not young, he’s getting to be an older coach. He’s got Kentucky and the NIL. Still can’t do it. This is not hard it is what it is.

Should have been way above Pope on the list in the first place.

Sorry, calling BS on this hindsight narrative.

In that offseason, Todd Golden had:

  1. Only been a head coach for 5 seasons
  2. Had never finished with fewer than 10 losses (a 24-10 season at San Francisco)
  3. Had coached the Gators for only 2 years, and made 1 NCAA tournament (lost first round)
  4. Never won an NCAA tournament game
  5. 2 of his 5 seasons as a head coach were losing seasons (including year 1 at Florida)
  6. Career record of 97-67 (69% winning percentage)
THAT is the head coach you would have been happy with in that offseason?

Explain it to me, seriously, I am putting you on the spot. WHY should Golden have been WAY above Pope in that offseason?

If you have good reason, fair enough, but I am dying to know what those reasons would have been.

Pearl I absolutely believe would have but now he’s retired and will be pushing 70 the earliest the job will become available. I’m not rehashing the 8 millionth Oats conversation coz it doesn’t matter how plainly the man said no, was even very specific about the fans etc. Some of y’all just believe what you want to with him, so I’ll not bother getting into it again. I’ve even provided you literal quotations from it before. So chalk me up as I don’t care what anyone on here says, I don’t believe that man is coming. I do know Golden was effectively begging for this job last time according to KSR+ back then, coz that’s where I came from before I came here. I’d not be shocked at all to see Golden as the next coach of Kentucky IF — Mark Pope cannot get this train on the tracks. I still believe Pope gets this train rolling and I’ve been pretty consistent on it. I believe he is a unique opportunity to succeed and stay loyal for a long time. But he has to get it done.

What excuses are you going to have this time next year?
Golden took over at Florida in 2022. lol. He legit went straight up immediately after his first season. Had a title now in his 3rd season and working on another final four. Pope is in his 13th season with 2 tournament wins and a 63% winning percentage.

It’s either they’re trolling at this point or slow.

Oats can’t turn down an offer that was never presented. Oats was a no immediately by Barnhart over the shooting. You and I both know Barnhart isn’t offering a guy coming off a shooting where someone died on campus lol.

Barnes did the same thing oats did. He attached his name to the job for recruiting when he realized no offer was coming. Coaches do this sometimes it’s good for press and strategy.

whether or not Golden should have been hired, he needs to be the first or second call after next season. Pope is not cut for this job. That will be clear to everyone after next season. Or it likely will be. If Kentucky believed Golden wants it, Pope needs to be replaced. Programs do this all the time they get rid of even a decent coach to go bet the better one. It should be no different here.

That or your 63% quote means nothing, especially when four or five posts above this you’re creaming for Oats a career 69% coach with a larger sample size. I like you, Morg, but you’re far too intelligent for these cheap talking points. Pope has a job to do and if he doesn’t do it well enough, he will be gone. Until then, simply try to be sincere, like you were with Pope three months ago. I didn’t hear a damn word about 63% in the off-season. For good reason. It means nothing. What means something is the 19-10 which hasn’t met anyone’s expectations. Gotta be better.

It would have been hard to follow cal so less would have been willing but the truly deserving would have said yes then. But almost anyone will jump at the chance to replace Pope.

I will say a lot of experts and fans were really high on Golden before he won a title last year. Plenty people were even asking why we didn’t go after him instead of jumping on Pope. But it’s done. Probably ends up at Kansas/UNC/NBA at some point because as long as Mitch Barnhart is here, Pope isn’t going anywhere as long as he makes the tournament, performance be damned. (I hope the boosters take over)

I don’t really see any reason to leave for another team other than the NBA. At this point he’s proven to himself he can win a title at Florida so I can see him thinking the NBA is the next challenge. It’s basically exactly like Donovan.

Pope started with an empty bench and is 42-22 with a S16 with massive injury issues both seasons. Golden went 40-29 despite having 47% of their scoring back including a 16 ppg Colin Castleton. HE would have been ****canned here.
Golden would be an upgrade for sure. Not sure we couldn't find a better coach than Golden but he would be way better than Pope regardless.
