Future of the MLB draft?
If these changes go through, it's going to change college baseball forever, and probably in a good way.
A slotting system would mean that we would know exactly what a player would be offered, and since the coaches are going to know what the player wants in terms of money, it will be easier to predict whether or not they are going to leave or go pro. That means that the coaches would know more quickly whether to replace the player or not. As it is, the signing deadline for college is Aug. 1, and the deadline to sign with the draft is Aug. 15. That means if a recruit signs late, we could not replace that recruit for the next season unless it's with a walk-on.
Internationalizing the draft would mean that some of our recruits would likely fall lower, and some guys would not get drafted at all. Of course, if that happens it makes it more likely that they will sign with MSU.
Those two changes would probably increase the overall talent in the SEC and country multifold. (George Bush would be proud of that last word) That means better baseball for us.
This has to be approved by the players union, but I think that there's a good chance of that happening because a lot of MLB players don't like seeing guys that have essentially proven nothing in the pro game get a huge bonus- whether that is a draft pick or an international guy like Aroldis Chapman.
This would change the face of college baseball forever.
