Interesting comments from Pope

Probably past time that Pope starts lighting guys up.

My Mom was a great woman by all accounts, but she would remind me from time to time, that she was in charge when I would misbehave. Pope doesn’t ever seem to remind his players that he’s in charge, and when players don’t have any fear of their coach, they do whatever they want.

I can't imagine Stokes yelling at Mark Pope...

I'm not bashed, but you take one moment in time and determine it's true that's on you
It is not one moment... There were moments in time last year in the 20 point loss in Madison Square Garden against Ohio State, a team that did not make the NCAA tournament. Denial is on you.

This is why .the majority of fans were pissed when Pope was hired. Unfortunately, he was a middle of the road hire and overall coach.
Yeah that " majority" then filled Rupp arena and cheered like mad men at his welcome ceremony. At least you are honest enough to make your agenda clear unlike many of the other infants on this board.

Hate to see us lose against Louisville but it happens Oweh should go for 30 next game sure he has seen the fans criticizing him that will get him motivated
This is the thing. We don’t NEED Oweh trying to score 30. He’s not good enough to shoot that many times.

That’s why you substitute and call time outs. Not 100% satisfied with this statement.
He did sub quite a bit and used all his timeouts though. Didn't have any timeouts left like Cal would have brought to the locker room after a game.

No way?!?
You know what's crazy to me is Oweh came out and said what he said after Georgetown wiped the floor with us. I know he said it about the home court but to turn around and play like that again ( regardless of where you're playing). I think we have a problem on our hands ( especially being voted SEC pre season player of the year)...

After the loss to Georgetown, Otega Oweh expressed that the team was disappointed and acknowledged a need for improvement, particularly in consistency and defense, calling it a valuable test that showed them what they need to work on for conference play. He emphasized that the team had a "duty to protect home court" and felt they had not played up to their standards, vowing it would not happen again. Oweh also stated there were no excuses and the team needed to focus on the basics and bounce back with better practices.

What about tOSU and Ole Miss? What about Tennessee in the S16? See, you don't just get to cherry pick the good wins (and there were a bunch). There were also a fair share of head scratchers and absolute torchings too.
That tOSU game was a gut punch! Ironically, I thought the GTown game looked exactly like a carbon copy of it. Hmm

Buddy, you were trying to prove a point. I wasn't. You were saying his 7 top 15 wins or whatever it was, was due to great gameplanning. If that's the case, the others shouldn't have happened? I'm not saying he's good or bad at it. I'd honestly have to see practices and read scouting reports to form an opinion on that. What I don't think you get to do is point to the great wins and ignore the bad losses while trying to prove your point.

The fact that our PG is hurt again without a true backup is a concern. If this team is looking for excuses for bad play and resulting loses, they can find them. It will take real leadership and playing for each other to have any success this year. Apparently, Lowe was a real floor leader, and no backup is a real problem, IMO. If players like Oweh start looking for excuses for poor play and loses, they will find them and lip service won't get it done. I am hopeful that Pope will get it going but I don't like the way things are starting thus far.

The last loss to Tennesee wasn’t due to poor game planning. We were busted up crippled with injuries. We additionally had upset a higher ranked UT twice. Upsetting them 3 times wasn’t a given. Surprised you think that game should have gone our way?

You don't see how Pope interacts with these players for 90% of the time. You just take Popes demeanor from a 2 hour snippet from games. I almost assure you Pope puts players in their place or you would see alot of off court issues like DUI's, breaking curfew etc. You have no idea how Pope manages his team but 100% certain to run to this board and bash him. This post isn't even necessarily meant just for you. So many supposed UK fans do and bring nothing to this board, program or team other than to show up here and bash the coach, players etc. 🤔

How was the sweet 16 game a head scratcher? We had upset them twice during the season, were banged up by the time we saw them again, and they were just a stronger team that day. Its basketball my guy, the other team is trying to win too

Uh, get over yourself. I’m a huge Pope fan. However, he isn’t perfect like you think you are. Don’t ever tell me I’m a “supposed UK fan”. I guarantee you I’ve spent more time and money following UK sports than just about anyone, for over 50 freaking years.

I‘ve been to countless football and basketball games, both home and away. Don‘t act like some holier than thou dickhead. Don’t ever preach at me again.

I bet one was Pope. When Louisville was going on that first run to jump out to the first double digit lead, Pope was standing in front of the scorers table and looked not only defeated but lost. Now for all you sensitive fans, bash away at this comment...
He was underwater coaching cause I believe Kam Williams sat tge whole first half ,I was screaming put him in the game for a while then I gave up! I kept telling my buddy Lou fan ,I was telling him hes a difference maker but he only played 10/ to 14m I think. I know when he got in he made some plays and grabbed some rebounds ,he hit a 3 from the wing about 4ft past the line nothing but nylon!

This is public message board and if you post ******** I will call you or anyone else out on it and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. You didn't address my question though of you don't know **** about how Pope interacts or holds players accountable as you or I do not see 90% of the behind the scenes happenings so get over yourself. Just continue to show up here posting meaningless dribble just to ***** and be negative with absolutely no proof. Childish. Carry on.

Get real. Like they are going to call that out in the game. Guys, look at Oweh. Now see how he is hanging his head. Now don't you guys do that..... Yeah, we're gonna hear that in a time out.

I suspect those moments were more like "STAY THE *F* IN FRONT OF YOUR MAN ON DEFENSE. SOMEBODY GET OUT ON HIM IN THE CORVER LIKE *F*ing NOW". Of course, Pope is a nice guy. I'm sure he said please.

You absolutely call out a player for bad body language. That and sit them if their emotions are impacting the team. You just cant let that happen and it should be recognized well before film study.

Gas costs over a dollar a gallon these days. BCG might have done that and shove a pop tart in their face. In the case of the UL, game, our face was melting on defense. We had bigger fish to fry at that moment.

And what had Williams done in any of the exhibition games or the 2 regular season games to justify more minutes than others?

How long you have supported the program has nothing to do with whether or not you are in the right on this point. The fact is, you dont have the first clue as to how Coach Pope interacts with the players in practice. Je is not the only coach that feels as though berating them for a show for fans is counterproductive to talking to them like men.

Lol. You calling someone childish. Mr. tough guy that knows everything. I know what I see, and I never see Pope get in a players face and light him up. What’s so hard to comprehend about that? What are you watching? Tell me exactly when you’ve witnessed Pope go off on a player.

Why would anyone weight exhibition performance more than the only game we played against a good team that counts? Williams minutes should absolutely be a thing
Believe it or not your past performance and results matter to any coach regardless if it is from practice, exhibitions or real games. If you don't use real life results what should you use? Hearsay or rumors?

So you think performance versus Nicholls and performance versus Louisville are graded equally? I think that’s a wild take

You don't remember last year when Pope went off on the whole team in the locker room? Was so upset he broke furniture and hurt his hand. Guess you think he should have done that on live TV and been referred to as a bigger *ss than Bobby Knight. Dude i really don't want to argue with you. You posted something that was a slight on Pope and you do not know how he disciplines them, holds them accountable or anything. You can't take his demeanor during games as an overall. He can't in today's environment come across as an *ss or that would really affect recruiting in the transfer portal or high school recruits.

What HS. Didn't appear to have much trouble prepping for Duke and Florida last year.
HS? This is college ball we're talking about. And as far as your reply to rebound35, just because Rupp Arena was filled (and it was, my husband and I were there) doesn't mean everyone thought he was the perfect fit. IMO he was the perfect fit with the situation at hand. No coach, no roster, and fans desperate for UK to get back to it being about UK and not the NBA.
