We used very little read option and used no Bumphis or Heavens end arounds or trick stuff with them. Pretty plain on offense and we scored 49 points. And Perkins is as fast as advertised.

Most frosh. QB's get those happy feet and jump around the pocket but he didn't do that at all.......Stood in there and looked comfortable.....Of course, there wasn't much of a rush on him but he didn't look to run first.......

WR stats

Heavens - 112 yards 2 TDs
Bumphis - 100 yards 2 TDs
Berry - 91 yards 1 TD

Haven't seen WR production like that well ever at State.

When the pressure came, he stepped up in the pocket and continued his reads.

I haven't been on the Russell bandwagon and I still don't think I've completely hopped on it... but he impressed me tonight. Showed lots of poise. Hopefully he can do that against SEC defenses too.

The one thing that scares me, is that his passes weren't "on the money". He had several throws he left low or behind the receivers......

Which brings me to my next observation: Our receiver corps looks to be pretty damn good.

The play where he fumbled the snap, picked it up, and calmly hit the WR for a 1st down told me a lot about his poise.

Figured that the coaching staff was retarded for allowing anyone to take time away from J. Banks. As soon as I formulate that thought, Langston has two picks. Well done coaches. After all the years of Croom and now Stansbury to a degree, I feel like I have hada lot of positive reenforcement to second guess our marginal coaching decisions. Feels good to be wrong as amother 17er. Cheers.

Russell looked as calm under pressure as I've ever seen a MSU quarterback. I'm kind of concerned about the D but Ireally don't know why. They seemed to be somewhat slow for a what I would describe as a lesser opponent. However, it is hard to argue with the result.

The fumbled snap was extremely impressive...also, the 3rd-and-11 to Heavens when the pocket collapsed around him. Never looked anywhere but straight ahead, just moved up, went through his reads, threw a bullet on the money. He looked fantastic.</p>

our offensive execution was a thing of beauty. Relf looked good and Russell was very impressive in his first ever collegiate game. Yeah, the opponent sucked, but he still looked very poised. He made many very good progressions through his options. Overall, the running game looked pretty good too.

Areas for improvement that I saw:

- Kickoff coverage: Memphis seemed to get 20+ yards on every kickoff. Need to improve that against SEC teams.
- Secondary play: They seemed to be out of position some. The freshman QB was picking us apart a little bit. I will chalk it up to it being the first game though & still having a young secondary.
- Pass rush: Our blitzes seemed to be kind of ineffective, especially in the first half. If we are going to leave our young secondary on an island, we are going to have to be more consistent at getting pressure early in the game.

Just my thoughts based on watching tonight. I will probably go back & watch a little more closely to some of these things. The kickoff coverage is the only one of the three that seems to be a pretty glaring weakness. The other two areas we were decent to pretty good in, but there is definitely some room for improvement.

a great passing game, like Mullen promised. I'm sure it needs some work somewhere, but it was very impressive tonight.

was that the defense dominated and the offense needed a lot of work. Duh, now comes the real game and the O shines pretty bright and the D was somewhat lack luster. Not what I expected but it sure does feel good to have the O back in town. Now if we can just do something very few MSU teams have ever done and that is to have both the O & D running on all cylinders in the same season then I would be a true believer!

but shoot that guy looked good tonight....his first 2 td passes were suspect but overall I was very impressed by his poise in the pocket. I have heard bad things from GA's that work with the football team aboutRussell but he pleasantly surprised me today. I'm officially on the bandwagon.
