on whether all officials should be made NCAA officials under the same umbrella of authority. It may be an idea whose time has come. Would certainly help to create more uniformity in the way games are called across the entire country and hopefully take away some of the natural bias that currently exists in officiating crews when calling games that include one team from within their league and another that is not. Football is a game with so many subjective calls that just a slight bias can have a tremendous effect on the outcome of the game.

It'll never happen though. The big conferences aren't going to give up that kind of control.

...would want to take a step back and be paid to call games for the NCAA.

I think it is interesting that CFO West (the crew that worked the game Saturday) includes a mix of C-USA, WAC, and MWC officials and therefore arguably the two worst officiated games in MSU recent history include at least one Mountain West official.

after games that "those were C-USA officials". in other words, after a number of years removed from the current system we shouldn't have speculation of bias from an entire crew of officials. you would think the NCAA would like to be done with this type of speculation.

the only thing i don't like is giving more power over to the NCAA. i believe they have more than enough as it is.

You will get the same crapy calls we got Saturday. We need SEC Refs to call our games. No other conference Refs are use to the speed and they miss, or make bad calls all the time. Thank god for the replay or we would have lost a down this past saturday. How in the hell do you lose how many downs that have been played?

that the non-SEC refs can't make the calls when they referee for an SEC team because their is too much speed on the field or too much speed overall in the level of play. i believe there is a speed difference in our conference over others but it isn't so much where refs can't consistently make calls.

My compnay has two agents, that calls college football, one for the big 12 and the other for the SWAC and they both say that you can see the different in speed between conference and it does make a differents. I'm not on the field and can't speak for my self, I can only go by what two college official said.

still surprising that the difference could be so great that they are this inconsistent in calling plays. i have to believe that bias is more of a factor than speed. but you do have more info on it than me so this might the first time this minute i am wrong...only two to go to meet the average.

I am not going to disagree with you. You could ask 100 other college officials and get a different answer. That was only the opinion of two.

let's be honest, teams that play in BCS conferences have more to lose than teams in smaller conferences. Those teams play at a higher level and the refs must also work at a higher level. I'm not willing to give up SEC officials (which I think have been excellent with/since the addition of replay) to have *** hats like we had Saturday deciding games that could bring millions of dollars into the conference. You know the smaller conferences would raise hell if they set different tiers of officials for the better conferences. This is one area where might makes right.

not only did it apparently happen this time involving LSU/UGA one week and us the next but someone correct me if my memory is wrong. The year we started 8-0, while we were playing Bama, we returned a punt down to around their 20 yard line but the play was called back for a bogus hold or block in the back. The very next play we turn it over and I think they score in 2 plays. Ball game. Just the week before, refs had totally screwed up a couple of calls in a UGA/Vandy game and not only did the SEC admit it publically, they suspended the crew. After our game (and this is where my memory may be flawed) LT got a letter (but no public statement) from the SEC stating that the call on our punt return was a bad call but he should keep it quiet that they admitted it. As I recall, he had the letter published in the Clarion Ledger and Starkville Daily News.
