Interesting MSU related tidbit from the SMU scandal...

I am too young to remember much of this but I found this piece very interesting.... Especially when you consider how far we have come as a program... BTW, Collins is Bobby Collins, HC at SMU from 82-86

"Collins was not sanctioned by the NCAA for any role in the events leading up to the "death penalty," though the final report criticized him for not providing a convincing explanation for why players were still being paid after the school assured the NCAA that the payments had stopped.[9] Nonetheless, his reputation was ruined. Aside from being a finalist for an opening at Mississippi State in 1990 (which eventually went to Jackie Sherrill),[17] he has never been seriously considered for an opening at any level of college football."

This was taken from wiki. But, its very interesting to me that in 1990, our only option as a football program was to go with 2 coaches with some incredibly shady pasts... Now, we have a coach that is actually desired by the big boys

1990 thru 2000 was the best period for MSU Athletics I can remember (I'm a lot older than you). We had a winning football program and went to the Final Four.

moment. I also think we would have been hard pressed to get to where we are today without it. Its just depressing to think that we were SUCH an awful program that SMU's HC was a FINALIST for our job 4 years after being fired from SMU. That is not a feather in our cap...

I actually think it was prob LT's one shining moment.

I always understood that President Zacharias was more instrumental in hiring JWS. I may be way off base...

for our job was that he was a proven coach who was an MSU guy. But he just had WAY too much baggage. Even way more than JWS.

Seems I read somewhere that he was an MSU grad? It wouldn't surprise me if this was the case, and the school was interested in him due to past ties.

It was interesting a few weeks ago to read that Collins had been recruiting Marcus Dupree to Southern, and then took the SMU job in Dec. / Jan of Marcus's senior year. Dupree might have played at Southern if Collins had stayed there; who knows?

During that time Bobby Collins was not a name that ever came up as a potential replacement for Felker. Sherrill and Danny Ford were the 2 biggest targets.

Lots of people in Texas HATE Jackie Sherrill. My guess is, that link was written into wikipedia to smear State and Sherrill.

I remember the night we found out The Kang was announced as our new head coach. Coach34, myself and a few other friends celebrated in usual fashion by pulling the furniture out front at the Spruill townhouse and commenced to partying. It was said that night that we would be bowling again but would be on probation in 6-10 yrs but it didn't matter bc we would be gone. Little did we know that we would almost receive the Death Penalty with the hiring of Sly Crooms. From the best to the worst and now back to the best of times. What a ride. Hopefully the ink on the contract will be dry soon....

Also, when the faculty realized that we were going to hire either Sherrill, Collins or Ford, they boldly passed a resolution that State not hire a coach that had ever had a team on probation. Dr Z gave the faculty the finger and Sherrill was hired within a week. Just goes to show that the President has alot to do with the success of the football program. Ole Miss's decline is as much about Khayat leaving as anything else.

Because after the debacle in Florida, the NCAA told him to get as far away from college football as possible.

my brother was going to State at that time too. Will have to ask him if he remembers the Jackie celebration at Spruill

LT wanted Ray Perkins. Dr. Z wanted Jackie.

I do wonder how Perkins would have done here at MSU. I can't believe it would have been as good as Sherrill. I think Croom was a Perkins assistant, if I recall.
