"Words are things; words are not only things, but sometimes very dangerous things. They are like firearms and should be handled very carefully. Have a care of your words or you may hurt somebody when you do not mean to. A man's reputation and living may depend upon his neighbor's grammar and accusations of horrible sins, may grow out of nothing but syntax."
- The Ladies' repository; Methodist Episcopal Church, J.F. Wright and L. Swormstedt, 1861.
Our words have an effect. Written or spoken words. Positive or negative words. Each of our words, by their very nature, has a purpose and seeks to fulfill that purpose when uttered or written.
We can try to deny this, but to do so is irresponsible.
Some people think they have a right to be negative, pessimistic and critical of others. Indeed, you may. However, if you want to own that right then be man enough to own the consequences that go with it.
Simply believing a person in the public eye should be able to take it is not enough. We cannot choose how someone reacts to what we say or write. Don't be surprised when negative words produce negative reactions. Even if the athlete, coach or administrator is a public person. After all, they are people too.
I'm not telling anyone they cannot say what they wish to say. I'm just saying realize the impact your words may have and be responsible for that. Don't be childish and throw rocks at cars but think you're innocent because you hide your hands behind your back.
Some of our mothers told us to choose our words carefully. It may be a good idea to follow that advice even in our digital world.
