Had a chance to tape an interview with him a few years ago with MSU hosted the '63 team back for recognition.

Here's the full 12 minute clip.

Really, really nice man.

Thanks for this. My mother knew Joe Dan Gold when she was at State.<div>
</div><div>I think the one question that I would have wanted to know (and he touched on this briefly in your interview) is: why were we the last team to integrate in the SEC? It was clearly the wave of the future. Why did he not sign a black player while he was coach? </div><div>
</div><div>I'd have to think that this set us back a bit during the '70s.</div>

It wasnot until 1967 that a SEC school signed a black basketball player; however, please know that many black athletes were recruited by SEC schools. Because of the time and the environment in the sixties, recruiting black athletes to predominately white schools and viceversa was a challenge and not the norm. If Joe Dan Gold had beenfortunate to successfully recruit black players, let it be known that they would have played at Mississippi State University. Through the years Joe Dan Gold has served diligently to be a"change agent" both in his personal and professional life.</p>
