Sure, Messenbrink can be beaten too. But I predicted Mendez would not get beaten in 3 Nationals before his Sophomore season and right now I am 2 for 2 with one to be determined. I like my chances. We will find out in a month and a half. Oh, and I detest Ohio State and would love for Mendez to lose, but not to someone from OSU.
I'm calling it right now. If vega meets mendez he wins

Making excuses for other people is for proxy wussies.
No excuses he's wrestling. He said he needs bigger legs well he couldn't lift legs in the offseason because he was recovering from hip surgery. That's not an excuse on why his legs aren't bigger it's actually a fact

Totally. That is not an excuse. It is merely the thing that everybody calls an excuse according to the accepted definition of excuse. 🧐

Last year he tore his hip and had surgery after the season. And he's been dealing with something serious all year long he was injured early in the season

Excuses and facts don’t have the same equivalency in PA that they do in Iowa.

Must be a perk of winning 12 out of 14 while also being the best HS wrestling state in the country.

That's an amazing stat. And I don't think it's because he's necessarily wrestling poorly, I just think it's a tough weight class and to some smaller extent, his tool bag is limited and other guys have figured him out.
Agreed … Ayala is good and right there
133 is sick

Ayala is big, good defensively, is crafty enough on top, and he has one really good attack (the slide by) that is not a surprise to anyone anymore, but still dangerous enough to catch an elite guy once in a while. His low single is money against lesser guys, but he doesn’t finish well enough against the top tier.

He is capable of beating anyone if he gets that one slide by and situationally the match breaks right for him. But to say he’s right there is not true anymore. He’ll have to beat 3 guys in a row that are better than him to win a NC. That’s not happening. He might catch one, but he’s not doing even two in a row.

There are 4 guys at least that are clearly better than him at this point. And probably another couple on his level. He’s clearly the next tier down and maybe two tiers down depending on how those top 4 shake out ( none have faced each other yet). That’s not right there unless you are Radar.

He better finish 4th at B1Gs or better, because one slip up to a guy like Fugitt will give him a seed low enough that he’ll likely face one of those guys in the R16 that is as good as him, before he even hits a guy who’s better than him in the quarters.

141 from my friend RoughPaul:

1st Period

If you were named Kale, why are you wrestling at Iowa, and why can't your parent's spell correctly?
Mendez leading 6-1 after the 1st

2nd Period

Mendez got a lot better after beating our guy who wrestled like P.J. Duke in the national finals two years ago
There is a guy in the back with a full beard and a beanie on inside. I bet he's fun to hang out with
Decent looking Mom very animated in the background.....might be Mendez mom
10-2 Mendez after the 2nd

3rd Period

Stieber shouldn't have had 4 titles.......JO was robbed
Mendez is REALLY good!
Mendez with the tech

Standing ovation.....that was his mom

I don't remember the score. It wasn't 8-2.
tough crowd

Backups for the Buckeyes at 157 & 165. Great job by Birden to hold Caliendo to a decision. He looked good doing his job. Caliendo is still great, but, he may have regressed a bit. That is just what I'm seeing, he is probably my favorite current Hawkeye.
As I have said repeatedly, Caliendo has maximized his talent. To his credit, by the way. He is not a great athlete. He was held to three points by an otherwise inferior opponent who has more athleticism. Caliendo is the same wrestler I watched as a high school senior in Illinois at Batavia, just more so. He's stronger and has a great gas tank, but he just doesn't have the fast twitch that the elites do.

Has anyone done less with more? I don’t think he’s hit a leg day since being on campus. Forget about filling the A gap at this point
Teasdale.

Should also note: Kueter at least has made the podium. Christian Carroll in the same HS class is on his 3rd school and just now a starter, and this year is a borderline AA candidate.

Davino took a grand total of 1 shot for the entire match. Ayala was the better wrestler on the mat.
Couldn’t disagree more. I never got the feeling that Davino was in trouble during that match at all. Same feeling I had with Marcus- score was close but that happens. Next time it could be a 2 TD win easily Davino is one tough hombre.

I’m higher than most on here than Marcus if that’s possible. I think he’s the best true freshman I’ve ever seen. He can do it all. I expect him to beat Davino, but I’m expecting a war. I’m expecting a lot of anxiety during that match.

But realistically Mr. Fast Twitch certainly does NOT have the “fast twitch” either…so there’s that.

My concern for any 133 pounder is going bottom against seidel that kid is also a beast and can turn with ease

Obviously we’ve all seen Aaron the last four years. I’m not ready to put him up with the top 4 until he faces somebody that is truly a solid podium guy and I’m not talking Tyler Knox despite his ranking.

He’s been a step behind the Blaze, Jax, Davinos his whole career - I don’t think he’s ever gotten close to beating one (0-3) and I’ll wait until he turns someone of consequence before I put him up there.

I saw this posted on the mat. The big 5 freshmen have faced each other a lot over the past 3 years. Records against each other:

Blaze 7-2
Jax 6-4
Davino 5-5
Seidel 0-3
Larkin 0-5

That was a great match, especially that first period scramble. Forrest and Marcus is an interesting matchup. Does the scrambling ability of Forrest penetrate Marcus' defensive prowess or does Marcus' positioning win the day? The good thing about Marcus' style on his feet is that he doesn't open himself to Forrest's slide-by. How any of their matches play out is very intriguing. If I had to choose, I would say Marcus has the slight edge at this point because he can combine good scrambling ability of his own (see this scramble against Forrest) along with his world-class defense and positioning.
