Riley took over a team that had multiple 8-9 win seasons. Rhule did not. Riley also inherited Tommy Armstrong. Rhule? Nuttin honey.

His overall record was 19-19. His conference record was 12-14 which is still better than Rhule. Though, most of those wins came in the 2016 season which had the softest of soft schedules.

Eichorst hiring Riley was the start of down fall of our program that we haven’t recovered from.

There really wasn’t any way we could have logically hired anybody else. There would have been widespread revolt because Tom wouldn’t have blessed anybody else. We most definitely fired Frank at least a year too soon.

I think when Minnesota came calling for Frank-Coach Osborne made a promise to Frank that Coach Osborne would step down in a couple of years and Frank would take the job. I’ve heard Coach Osborne refer to a “promise” several times- pretty sure that was it.

Meaning what? That his 1 (at least I think it was only 1) conference championship in the 6 years following a decade of one of the greatest and most impressive programs in history, is proof that the downfall didn’t start with Frank? That’s comical, and thank you for pointing out that he managed to get 1, and making my point for me. He was given the keys to a high performance vehicle when the most he could handle was a Chevy Cavalier.

Yeah, if TO said he was going to get it, he was going to get it, doesn’t mean it wasn’t a bad decision. He wasn’t fired too soon, except from the standpoint that the jackasses in charge did not have a plan post firing.

Yep and no coach no matter who should have the authority or right to make that promise. Then on top of that Frank wanted to make some coaching changes on staff and get some younger guys involved but TO put the clamps on that . Truth is TO has interfered many times in Nebraskas coaching issues since his retirement.

The problem of course is that while Tom shouldn’t have had the authority to do what he did, he earned that authority. He took less money to stay at NU and made NU 10s if not 100s of millions of dollars. Who realistically would we have hired if not Frank? We can debate whether Frank was the best choice but realistically he was probably the most logical choice.

Here’s the thing. It’s not his job, his responsibility, or his privilege to hire his replacement. If he made a promise, then he was wrong to do so. To the degree anyone thinks the downfall started with Frank, they should be blaming Osborne for scheming behind his AD’s back.

You may be right- like many I felt Coach Osborne understood the job very well as well having great insight on the ability of his coaching staff. One would think Coach Osborne would have been in an excellent spot to determine who may have been the best fit. Coach certainly wasnt in this for the money or even fame - I’m going to definitely give him a pass but understand and respect how others may feel differently.
