Is all this preseason hype going to be Mullen's undoing?

I've seen several on here figure we will be around 8-4 and are satisfied with that outcome. But the last couple of days have infused the fanbase with a good dose of SGH (Sheep Growth Hormone). Now will 8 regular season wins seem like a disappointment? Again most logical posters on here realize that Mullen's "hot seat" has been generated by his own success, but could the press clippings from July make moderate success on the field this year seem like This team fell short?

Stuff Happens

Injuries, which we can understand, Some fumbles, some interceptions, and all of that...

We seem to be a very forgiving group(me included) BUT at the $ being paid out, by US.

General performance is expected.

I think 9 wins are a reasonable expectation from the fanbase, but I wold think that 8 wins, with 1 of course being against UMiss and possibly a win against Auburn, LSU or A & M, should make the season's success seem tolerable.

To put it another way though, we might not wanna be 7-4 going into the UMiss game"needing" that win to get to 8( 7-5 would be a huge disappointment) and a respectable bowl, so maybe 9 wins, with one being the final game, may be the only way to measure it as an "As Hyped" successful season.

We pay enough, to expect a reasonable performance

I'm not saying boot the coach for a less than great year.

All of the factors must be looked at. Some situations, and coaches deserve more time.

But hell, I've been hesitant to fire all of our, fired coaches.

Different Day....I still don't like a lot of change.

Just buy your DAMN tickets, and move on....

Not really, speak your mind, we are all in this together.

I don't know if there has ever been a more true post. If we win 7 games the board will meltdown and if we go undefeated I promise someone will complain about game management.

Mullen's "hot seat" was generated by his own failures. It went away when people saw that he was addressing those areas.

People won't remember the July press clippings in August much less in December. If they're playing competitive and entertaining football, most "logical posters on here" will consider the season a success - regardless of the win total.

Using your link. Should Missouri have been in the SECCG ? No matter what the Mullen excuse factory puts out in 2014...if he wins no more than 7 games this year he will have proven to most (other than his blindest sheep) that he has topped out at MSU.

that no team in the SEC pays their coaches less than Mississippi State. And, we don't have a single coach in the top 25 or 30. We need to seriously pony up if we are going to keep this staff together.

Why would any mstate fan be concerned about overhype of our football program? I mean, when has this program ever disappointed after unreasonable expectations are fostered? [/FAAAAAARRRRRRT].

The pre-season hype is irrelevant. Mullen has put the program in position to have a very good year. If he falls short due to injuries or other things basically out of his control, most fans will be understanding, and some fans will be unreasonable. If he falls short otherwise, most fans will realize he has reached his ceiling and how upset they are will depend on how satisfied they are with winning 6 games in down years and up to 8 in good years.

But if Mullen hadn't put the program in a good position for this year, his seat would be hot right now. Last season was fairly disappointing with some fairly noticeable shortcomings on his part. If he had not corrected him, people would be much more mad than they will be if he rolls in at 8 wins this year, and possibly at 7, depending on how the losses look and what mitigating factors there are.

Going to take at least 8 wins to keep me on the fence. The stars won't align for us like they have this year but once or twice a decade at most. Time to check a few things off the list that we haven't yet. In reality, 8 wins doesn't likely do that, unless you consider beating aTm in that category...

that is always going to be the biggest challenge for msu and ole miss. we can and will pay the HC competitive salaries and with the right guy can keep him. but the total package of him being able to hire and keep really good assistants is enormous. we're both going to have to address that issue if we ever hope to really compete.

My bigger worry is that Muschamp has another bad year at Florida, and they come after Dan.

This right here.

If we have a big year and muschamp flops again this season. Wouldn't at all surprise me to see UF come after Mullen. And I don't buy any talk of
Foley and Mullen not getting along or one not liking the other.

Mullen winning enough games to get a job offer from one of the top 5-10 programs in the country isn't exactly something I'm worried about. I hope he does win enough games to get a job like that. If he does, we'll be in excellent position to hire another very good coach to replace him.

Exactly. We'll be in a position we've never been in before -- with talent, facilities, money, support, etc...

Agreed, but I'm not sure how anxious I am to put the Grasshopper front and center in a major coaching search again. Obviously helps having Hud sitting at ULL, but I would be nervous if he was in year 1 or 2 at a mid to upper tiered BCS school.

I am hard pressed to find a way this team wins "less" than 7 games with this schedule, even with some "mitigating factors."

The guy's seat has an Trane blowing cold air under it right now, as it should, but this schedule screams " 8 WINS!" and 9 or 10 as very possible. But less than 7....with essential 1A & 1B players at every position except QB...nah....
