or is someone else carrying out the punting duties? I can't get the depth chart to load off State's site.

"If he hits one 50 yards, great," Croom said. "But that's not what we're looking for because he's not consistently going to do that. He's proven that time and time again."

Yet he still has a job.

Cue Jack Cristil.

If we sign a placekicker this year we will know. Something just doesn't sound right about this to me.

a few years ago Carlson sucked and yet he kicked all year long. The previous kicker (who was quite good) never played his senior year and there was never an explanation. I think it was blamed on Amos Jones, but it seems like Croom just didn't like the guy so he wouldn't put him in. It was the kicker from Louisiana. Can't remember his name right now.

Why must there always be some mystery with Croom that nobody can explain?

Bulldog football is too complicated for simple statements, but year after year we fail to find a punter and I can'tunderstand why. Is there some curse on our school that keeps us from having a decent kicker? That position seems pretty important to me. I don't know whether to feel sorry for this kid - that he was doing fine and then pulled his hip out of socket, or to think that he is a weenie. It must be the first, because honestly, its against the rules to even hit him and most of the time we manage to tackle the receiver before the punter is the last hope to make the tackle.

Maybe they need a "designated tackler" like in baseball. The guy could stand behind the kicker and as soon as the kicker ran off the field, the designated tackler could participate.

Just a (wierd) thought.

to call Keith Andrews "quite good" is a huge overstatement. Barely adequate would be a much better description. Which of course, was a whole lot better than Carlson was.

I am not really sure how you quantify this one, other than by the touchback statistics. I remember seeing them a few years ago, and Keith Andrews put the ball in the endzone at least 50% of the time he kicked off. Carlson, on the other hand, I think only sniffed the endzone twice out of like 17 kicks or something. Whatever the statistics were, they weren't even remotely comparable. So I'm going to have to disagree that Andrews was "barely adequate".

Unless you're referring to their placekicking abilities instead of their kickoff abilities, in which case I can't comment 'cause I just don't know.

If you're talking about FGs I agree, but I seem to remember most the of the uproar concerning kickoffs as Keith had the leg to get the ball in the end zone at least part of the time, unlike Carlson.

I predict if anything else happens with this Kicker then we will be scrambling to recruit one at the last minute. We have really bombed on special teams under these coaches and it bit us in the butt last week. I hope we learned that special teams need to be practiced more than 15 minutes once or twice a week.

Croom wasn't protecting the punters last year and Richards got his leg broke. Coming out of high school he was said to be pretty damn good.

Named 1st team All-State as a senior by the Clarion Ledger. Punted 47 times with a 45.1 average with a long of 68. Was 8 of 12 in field goal attempts.

Eric was named 2nd Team All-State punter in 2005.

He was recently ranked as the # 10 kicker nationally by prokicker.com and ranked #5 nationally in kicker/punter combos.

You're right that Andrews was pretty good on kickoffs. There's no question that Andrews should have been kicking off that year, and he probably should have been kicking the FGs as well (although he wasn't all that much better than Carlson at FGs).

It's complicated, you know. It takes at least 8-10 years to get all of the special teams sets installed. This is the first year that Croom has had his special team guys exclusively. We need to give it time.

I just remember that we could have at least tried Andrews, but Croom refused. That's what baffled me at that time.

Again....playing for a private school, who is getting national attention. Who is it that is missing all this talent? Even Croom was angry about missing the Sparkle-shoe Waters. After he singlehandedly kept UAB in the game.

Oh yeah, doesn't McCorvey recruit in the Jackson area? I thought so. Ask around at the private and public schools...talk to the counselors and coaches. Ask them when was the last time that they actually saw the fat 17?

My source tells me that Tennessee and Ole Miss are climbing through windows around here... McCorvey? Hasn't been seen in a year. That tells me all I need to know.

please let Jeff Walker spread his seed far and wide to provide Mississippi State with decades of kickers that can 1) put it in the end zone every kickoff and 2) punt. While we're at it, when he planted Freddie Milons *** in the ground, that was kinda cool.

recruits Atlanta and part of Alabama- off the top of my head. The coaches territories are in the media guide, and I can't remember who does Jackson.

I loved it against Auburn when he flipped a guy over his back. They guy stood up and bumped into him a little. Then he fell over, pulled the "I'm just a little punter" routine, and drew a 15 yard penalty.

is Walker was built like a linebacker. He looked for people to hit on kickoffs. He was also master of putting his foot on a punt rusher's back, falling, and drawing the flag.

/Wasn't he the undefeated intrateam wrestling champ?

after the UAB game and Waters' kicking display was 'I don't know how we missed that guy.' And McCorvey knew exactly who Swayze Waters was.

I can't remember who it was, possibly Freddie, but he hit him on the sideline and knocked him into the benches. I just remember seeing Walker leaving his feet and thought "holy **** our punter just killed somebody".
