Is Bumphis a "B" player in the SEC?

So Bo Bounds says Bumphis is a B player who was not showcased his freshmen and sophomore year. Considering that Bumphis holds the TD reception record with more than half of his Sr. season left, over players like Eric Moulds, do you consider him to be a "B" player. On this TEAM he's certainly an A player, but compared to the rest of the SEC? I think he has shown he has pretty good hands, if not upper echelon speed.

I'll give him a B. He could pull a B+ from me if he shows up and actually does something this year against UTenn, Bama and LUS.

Bumphis is a good receiver but he is not upper echelon. While he has caught more TD's than Eric Moulds, I would not say he is as good a receiver as Moulds was. Moulds was much more physical than Bumphis. This is the first year that it seems to me that Bumphis is actually playing up to the level that was expected. He hasn't dropped as many passes and is fighting for the ball more than in the past. I would like to see a stat on how many times he was thrown to versus caught passes, and how many drops he's had over his career.

I think he has somewhat underperformed in previous years, especially last year. He is having a great year and showing good hands, but I think his speed is not elite speed. He is quick so that helps, but I wonder how he matches up with the others on pure speed. Right now, I'd say that Bumphis is indeed a B level receiver in the SEC who is having a great year. I think he is on the level of Jenkins rather than Moulds. Moulds had an ability to catch crappy balls and make his QB look good. I watched Moulds go get balls that appeared uncatchable. Bumphis has the advantage of a better QB this year and I haven't seen alot of catches that make highlight reels. Don't get me wrong, Bumphis is a very good WR, hopefully he'll continue to emerge over the next few games against stiff competition. I'd like to see him snag a few errant throws and show the elusiveness he seemed to have as a freshman. Time will tell. Congrats to him on breaking the record.

Bumphis is absolutely a "B" SEC player. If you were doing an SEC draft tomorrow, and it was time to draft receivers, in what order would you take these players? Its about talent, not stats.

Donte Moncreif
Justin Hunter
Cordell Patterson
Odell Beckham
Amari Cooper
Emory Blake
Andrew Dubose
Vincent Sanders
Chad Bumphis

You may put Bumphis over some of the these guys, but if your being objective, not many.

He is a B player. I have no problem with that. Like others have said he doesn't have the great speed to make him an elite player.

I think Moulds only played 3 years for us, plus he was injured for part of the 95 season. Bumphis is great against mediocre teams, but he almost disappears when playing the great teams. Moulds would have his best games against Alabama and Tennessee.

He is a B player, but I would like to know what his stats would be if he had played his entire career with someone like Russell. While not the fastest, he does a pretty good job of getting open and finding the endzone.

I would also like to take this time to thank the Bear for hitting him in the head with the bottle which lead to his arrest. You did us a favor by lighting a fire under his *** this past summer.

Eric Moulds went up and got the ball then he punched you in the mouth. Bumphis looks like Reggie Bush during the Saints years where he danced around trying to bust it open instead of getting an extra 3 yards.

If he gained 5-10 lbs and decided to hit the safeties head on, he'd be A level.

Gotta remember that Eric Moulds didn't play his senior year, and that schedules only had 11 games back then. And I don't remember if he played as a freshman or not. I suspect that Bump has already played in more games that Moulds did.

Probably a B Player, but I'll give him an incomplete so far.

We'll find out later this year. He's disappeared against good teams in the past, but other than the USCe game last year, he hasn't exactly had a qb that could put the ball where it needed to be when we've played good defenses. Nobody but future NFL starters are going to get more than a little bit of separation against Bama and LSU cb's from the past couple of years, and for all I know he was getting that much separation and we just couldn't throw the ball to that tight of a window.

Also, I would guess that if State had a true deep threat to stretch the field, Bumphis' production would probably be better.

There is no comparison between Moulds and Bumphis.

There is nothing Bumphis could do to reach the same level as Moulds. I know that's not what you said, so not really directed at you, but for those people that didn't see Moulds play, I don't think we have a single player on our team at any position that is near his level. If we had Moulds (assuming todays cb's are not that much better than the ones he went up against), Russel would be being mentioned as possibly the best college qb in the nation. He would change the dynamic of this team that much.

Moulds played his Sr year. I remember him getting introduced on Sr day and thinking "that seemed like a short career". Maybe because he played 3 years. I thought it was 2.

Anyway, Moulds had awesome size, speed, and hands. And Moulds could jump to the moon to get a football. There's a video out there where he out jumps two Bama DBs to get a touchdown. His rear end is about as high as the other guy's head.

Here's to hopping for good WR recruiting. Most of our WRs were recruited by Croom or early on by Mullen. We've got more of program to sell now than we did then.

Let's see....

Justin Hunter
Emory Blake (his QB support has been abyssmal)
Chad Bumphis
Donte Moncreif (comparison does not weigh future potential)
Cordell Patterson
Odell Beckham
Amari Cooper
Vincent Sanders
Andre Dubose

Note that you're missing Cobi Hamilton, Jordan Matthews, and others in this list.

Bumphis reminds me a lot of Pegues... just a different position. He's not the fastest player. Just a heck of an all around athlete. Doesn't have blazing speed or size, doesn't have the greatest hands, but he's pretty good all around and that makes him a B+ type WR. He'll out run some guys, make some miss, and run over a few.

I remember watching him at Tupelo and thinking the same thing. I didn't think at the time that he was the best pure WR on that team (Justin Bean was pretty good) but Bumphis was easily their #1 playmaker - just get him the ball and let him go.

Not to mention that Moulds was allegedly bangin Derrrick Taites girlfriend too. And Taite allegedly stopped throwing to him as much.

I think Moulds was a Prop 48? Didn't meet full academic standards, so you only got three years instead of four.

if I were to grade Bumphis by year it would be

Freshman:B
Sophmore:B
Junior: C
Senior B+(so far)

To his credit, I dont think he was completely healthy his junior year after he hurt his shoulder in the 2010 Egg Bowl (and missed the Gator Bowl). Those types of injuries can stick with you for a while. Will he be a star in the NFL? Probably not, but that is not to say he cant become the next Wes Welker. And Maybe he is not the dominant game changer most would like- but he has had some jaw dropping WTF plays I can remember :

2009 GA Tech game
2009 Egg Bowl catch and run from Relf
2011 punt return versus LA Tech
2012 Troy

Sherrill's daughter was the rumor.....

And to add onto that, Jackie's teams of that era were chock full of stupid problems. I remember the alleged racism with the QBs and WRs. We literally were a bunch of thugs with fade haircuts back in the day.

He's a decent B receiver, I thought he would be a Percy Harvan, but he hasn't had the migranes.

I was just thinking the same thing... Moulds never had a QB and not that TR is a first round pick, but Tate was a horrible passer and Sleepy (wasn't he a QB for part of that time?)was a run threat first....

Forget the statistics, Moulds is the best WR to ever play at MSU. It has nothing to do with his pro career either. Moulds was a man among boys. He made Derrick Tate look like Peyton Manning. Moulds was double teamed almost every game as well and still performed. Moulds didn't drop a ball within 10 feet of him.
