Is Byrne forgiven for extending Croom's contract and giving him a raise?

and in the process, costing MSU a couple mil? I'm still wondering what the hell that was all about. I just went along as a sheep about that decision.

You can also blame Nick Saban. Even at 1.7 million, Croom was the tenth highest paid HC in the SEC, tied with Houston Nutt, and only ahead of Bobby Johnson at Vandy.

Not giving him a raise after the Liberty Bowl would actually send the message that we aren't that serious about football because then the media would say "Here's a coach that just won 8 games for the first time in five years and he doesn't get a raise. What kind of football program is this?"

Besides, signing Mullen for 1.2 instead of the rumored 3 million pays for over half off Croom's buyout initself because Byrne saved us 1.8 million.

If it's true that Templeton is the one who really gave Crxxm and McCorvey the raises and extensions, why did we make such a big deal of saying we were going to put them off for 6 months until the new AD was hired? Why not just go ahead and do them in January? Even if Templeton had an unofficial agreement with them, I think Byrne would have been justified in saying that he wasn't bound by Templeton's unofficial agreement because the President had made a point of publicly saying that Templeton didn't have the athority to make any kind of deal. I'm a huge Greg Byrne fan. I think he's the best thing that's happened to our athletic dept. in a long, long time. But I do think he cost us close to $1M by giving Crxxm and McCorvey too much in raises and extensions.

Edite to add: He cost us more than $1M. I was just considering the additional salary for Crxxm for 1 year and McCorvey for 2. I forgot to include the increase in Crxxm's buyout due to 1 additional year over what he should have gotten.

Bowl game and it appeared things were finally moving in the right direction. The contract may have called for an incentive raise and if so Byrne was honoring the contract terms. The really insane salary jumps at other schools would have also affected that along with Croom finishing up his 4th year. I did not like the salary jumps but at the same time when somebody does what you expect of them you are obligated to reward that. Of course, by the time we were 4 games into the season, it was obvious Coach34 was right (cough, cough) and I and a few other sheep were wrong.........

If Byrne had not followed through with those contract extensions and raises it would have hurt the perception of MSU's program with potential coaches. Until it was crystal clear that Coach Croom and staff could not do the job, the only option was to make every effort to support them.

following the bowl game - are you seriously suggesting that the University should have not followed through on the agreement the University made with Croom? Both the extension and raise were handled by LT - Byrne was left the mess to clean up.
