His post game comments mentioned "not finishing" but he also emphasized poor coaching more than not finishing. What he didn't say about coaching may be more important than what he did say. He may have hinted that if we want better coaching, we need to pay for it as far as assistant staff. NOTE that he didn't say he was going to do anything about it. He just said it was poor coaching. Secondly, maybe he's tired of his job at State and wants to be fired. Third, maybe he realizes that there are limitations on how far State can go in the toughest division in the toughest conference there is. Some "fans" have unrealistic expectations about State. He has, in fact, already taken us "to the next level", since the next level for State is 6 to 8 wins a year. This year we might not make it to a bowl, but it's a down year. Expect some down years at Mississippi State under Mullen. If you want to, go back and look at State's history in football and realize that right now it's about as good as it's ever been and probably as good as it is going to get. Now go ahead with the slow clap. But it's all true. To talk of getting another coach who is going to do any better at Mississippi State is simply a pipe dream. It ain't gonna' happen.

My thoughts on the poor coaching comments are that I would not expect him or anyone to make any comments on changes in the media or post-game pressers. Mostly, I take comments around a game or even comments during the week with a grain of salt. I think Mullen has reached the point he is minding his P's and Q's in the media because he's been blasted in the past by fans and opponents alike for running his mouth. I just expect talk about how the coaches screwed up, don't throw your players or staff under the bus, talk about preparing for the upcoming week, no shots at opponents, rinse, repeat.

Also, unless we completely come apart at the seams, no staff changes will be made or even talked about until the season is over. There is no need for a sacrificial lamb right now... just see Texas for a great example.

Once again, another nay sayer. "It can't be done at mississippi state." Y'all are losers that accept that crap and believe that. It can be done here. Look at Jackie. Yeah it didn't last or whatever but he did it. I have faith that we can do it and its all about the coaching.

Hugh freeze is getting it done, guess what? In the state of miss. Using your logic, lets say for instance that nick saban came to state. You don't think he could win?

Dan has maximized States potential. This year is mostly likely not a bowl season but over his body of work, he has does as well as anyone has and probably will at MSU given the current SEC climate. Jackie did well at State. But OM and Bamas coaching office was a revolving door and the west was not near the strength it is now.

Buckey will do about what Brewer and Cutcliff and Nutt did before the collapse.

Yeah, people forget how down the SECW programs were when Jackie had his 3-4 year run of "glory". Right now we are just 17'ed before we even get started against teams like Bama, LSU, and now add aTm to that. We can hope to compete against teams like Auburn, Arkansas, and OM in most years, but those games will typically be toss-ups at best, and we certainly won't win them all. Losing them all in a single season will make for a bad year, and we may see that happen this year.

My mom sent me a text after auburn scored last night " you will only be as good as you believe you can be"
Now, I know this sounds hokey and I know it's all rah! rah!, but it ain't BS!
I have followed state for 40 of my 48 years, and have always heard the same bull from our fans, yeah we have sucked a whole lot, but you know what, this is who we chose to pull for!
Now, *** ain't stupid, he called it last night, he new he 17'd up with his scheme at the end, he played it too close to his vest and it bit is in the ***! I saw our players giving it all to do their best, yeah we should have won, by 2 td's but it did not happen! Any of you guys ever blow it?
Tell all of your crazy ***, friends who are freaking the 17 out to chill out and shut the 17 up on the webs and for Gods sake, never, ever, ever fill a players twitter page with BS comments!
You wanna be winners, act like winners!

Your mom sounds cool, and its great yall are so close, but at the end of the day, it only matters what the coaches and players believe. I do believe the players have the talent, but I'm not convinced they believe in *** I'm not convinced they even like him.

I been a state fan for 15 yrs. and all I hear is 8 wins is the most we can hope for and that's reality. Go screw yourselves because we can be just as good as bama or any other team out there. Gotta get the right coach.

It has little to do with getting the right coach.

We have to get a lot more money into the athletic department. Like 30-40 million more every year. Unfortunately, most State grads probably remain in Mississippi where it is the poorest state in the nation, so most state fans aren't able to give as much. The state in general has to improve in terms of standard of living, education, and opportunity. Until that changes, there won't be a large amount of more money coming in to MSU athletics.

Two words...

Kansas State...if somebody can get it done there, it can be done at Miss State...can't schedule the OSUs to start the season...we shot ourselves in the foot when we scheduled them ...build a consistent winning record with easier teams and we can draw the recruits...the Bill Snyder formula...ok that was more than two words.

We have like the 38 most revenue in the country. We have more than ole miss. Their are several teams that are ranked that has less money. Money isn't the issue. It's these knuckle heads in the athletic dept.

In the rennesiance of MSU football, assistant salaries has been left behind. All of our coordinators in the Mullen era have been has-beens or up-and-comers that get hired away elsewhere.

Strong programs have strong staffs. There is much more too it than the head coach.

Stricklin and Keenum are still a couple quarters short of a clue.

This^. People keep forgetting or ignoring the correlation between winning and money ... And vice versa.

Yeah, we can compete on an even level with schools that have twice the revenue, twice the recruiting base, twice the fan base as us. All we have to do is get the next Nick Saban to come to MSU and turn down job offers for double the money. No problem. It'll be easy

You are dead wrong again. Bill Curry, Ray Perkins, Mike Dubose, Mike Shula, Mike Archer, Curley Hallman, Gerry DiNardo on and on and on at many major universities. If your premise is correct what the hell happened with all these guys ? You are nothing but a Mullen apologist and your ******** is weak and getting weaker.

The SECW has and will be the toughest conference division for a while. (With the money and networks I'm dared to say from now on). It is gonna be a ***** for anybody to play in.

But yet a team right up the road(In Mississippi) looks like they are headed to a level higher than we've been. I don't buy the whole "this is as good as were gonna get". NOT TRUE! It can happen just need the right blend of coaching and cheating.

A missed field goal, and a dumb *** 2 pt conversion away from winning this game.

and you think he was sending a message? makes sense.

holy smokes though if we start TR any more the rest of the year I'll lose my ****.

We lose 24-10 with TR started, this is Daks team leg go.

Nope,..Mullen is not the best coach we can get here. Petrino would have won more than 8 in the maroon and white. Our coaching has been deficient on game day and we won in 2010 because of the duel threat qb system and talent. I like Mullen, but there are several coaches (that we could land) that wouldn't have lost Sat night..and wouldn't have lost against Okie St. or the Gator Bowl. That is a fact.

Does Northwestern fit that description? Because I watched them curb stomp us a few months ago.

Its such a moving target with this program. In 2010 it was "well, we can't compete with Bama and LSU", And everyone was fine with it. However, here it is in 2013 and it's starting to look more like "well, we can't compete with Bama, LSU, Ok State, Northwestern, Auburns, and OMs of the world".

Thats a problem to me.

My biggest complaint with this program is that it takes a middle of the road team to fall off the cliff before we can knock them off. That isn't much different than the last 20 years of MSU football.

They all got fired because those schools can afford to buy out coaches every 3-4 years. The schools that fired those losers have also gone out and really dug into their pocketbooks to get somebody to go there. We can't afford to go pay someone 4-5 million dollars out of the gate and also buy out our old coach as well as pay the buyout at their old school.

They also have adequate funds to pay for the assistants that the head coach wants. I'm not sure if you've been paying attention, but under every coach we've had the last 20 years, they've always had any successful coordinator hired out from under them, and most of them weren't getting promoted in the move.

What other kind of coordinators are there? Great head coaches who decide they'd rather take a demotion?

someone else bitching about ok st.

::rolls eyes::

the game was played. it's over. it was NOT a bad decision to play the game in year 5 of mullen. if in year 5 we still have to rig our schedule to hope we get to 6 Ws, maybe it's time go ahead and bottom out and look for a new coach that by year 5 won't be reliant on beating 4 crappy non-conference opponents, kentucky (assuming stoops doesn't turn then around, but he's cruiting like freeze right now), and whatever west team is in meltdown mode or if we catch vandy from the east (and they aren't a given anymore with franklin).

OLE MISS JUST WENT INTO TEXAS IN YEAR 2 OF THEIR CURRENT HC AND BEAT THE **** OUT OF TEXAS AND WE ARE STILL BITCHING ABOUT A NEUTRAL SITE GAME IN YEAR 5 OF OUR HC AND WISHING WE'D SCHEDULED A GUARANTEED W INSTEAD. you get the respect you earn and not a single person with an ounce of knowledge was giving us respect about 2011 or 2012 when we didn't beat anyone of substance and got beat down by anyone worth a damn. it didn't matter whether we went bowling or not.

But, but, but, Mullen said we were going to win championships, go through Tuscaloosa ringing our cowbells on our way to Atlanta, dominate the State recruiting, wouldn't lose to "The School up North" again (reference to his Yankee teams of Ohio State vs. Michigan), and "This is Our State". What happened to all these promises?

Texas fired their DC last week and got beaten by almost the exact same margin a week earlier by a BYU team that got beaten by Virginia in week 1. Looking at the rest of their schedule, they may not make a bowl.

OKState is probably the best team in the Big 12 this year.

It's not a fair comparison.

But Petrino wasn't available when we hired Mullen.

And he tends to leave basically in the middle of the night if he gets a better offer kinda like Tuberville (such as, when he left Atlanta for Arkansas at mid-season ... apparently a big surprise to all).
