I thought DM over on Gene's board seemed to indicate he would be eligible to play this year. Not sure why the statement you reference was made in the article.

he is of absolutely NO use to us this fall at all. Absolutely no other reason for a 21 year old guy to redshirt. In fact one of the bonuses of having him hopefully be available to play this fall is that it might allow Russell to redshirt.
