Is it fair to penalize a team by taking wins away?

I got to thinking about the Alabama situation. Obviously, if it were MSU, taking our scarce wins away would be the ultimate slap on the wrist. It is doubtful that the NCAA would use that same punishment on us. Instead we would get scholarship reductions or something along those lines which is actually a tougher punishment. It is almost a built in way to not really hurt the winning teams like Bama and USC. There really needs to be some kind of uniformity with the penalties.

Who cares about taking victories away from years past. Limit their scholarships and you will actually feel the pain of losing in the future.

I've read that UA will vacate the wins, but that other schools won't pick up Ws. If this is indeed the case, I want USM to quit claiming to lead our series 14-12. I want the CL quit using these numbers next time Cleveland writes a piece arguing that we should play. Our record on the field against them is 14-12-1 our way. If forfiets actually mean vacated wins then from here on we're 12-12-1 vs USM.

Penalties like this are set up punish Alabama, Florida State, and USC one way and Miss. State, Memphis, and Tulane another. It keeps the good teams good and the bad teams bad. Looks to me like this could set the NCAA up for a major lawsuit one day by setting a precedent like this.

It really does boggle me that there isn't some kind of penalty code by the NCAA. Something like:

15 secondary violations in any 2 year period equals 1 scholarship lost for the next signing class.

1 major violation = x scholarship lost

2 major violation - x scholarship lost

Lack of Institution control = x

Two marks of LOI in a 10 year period = x

I know the types and severity of issues varies, but it shouldn't be too hard to come up with a general rule and I think scholarship losses should be the main penalty for all violations b/c as others have said, we cares about forfeiting past wins.

you know that anyone actually on those teams and any bama fan out there will say, "we actually won those games." they still enjoyed seeing their team beat another team. they still were able to leave the game happy and go back to their tailgate and booz it up for several hours and talk crap while the other team's fans got the hell out of there. the players were able to celebrate and in this case were able to go to a bowl game and do it all over again. you can't actually take that kind of stuff away but you can put things in place that might prevent it from happening as easily next season or for several seasons.

they should be forced to lose scholarships and Croom should be made their OC. now that is a real sanction.
