BOTH offense and defense in the same year?

Top 15? No way. Very few teams accomplish this.
Top 30? It is likely to happen at times.
Top 50? Yes.

Either one has a chance to make it top 15, but not both during the same year.

2015 Offense/Defense - 34/63
2016 Offense/Defense - 90/30

Riley/Langs offenses at Oregon State have finished:
2010 - 94
2011 - 73
2012 - 43
2013 - 26

Diaco's defenses at Notre Dame have finished:
2010 - 51
2011 - 30
2012 - 7
2013 - 31

Let's look at both Alabama and Ohio State from 2010 through 2016. Alabama has finished in the (both offense and defense) top 20 one time while Ohio State has finished in the top 20 twice.

Alabama's offense and defense have finished:
2010 - 22/5
2011 - 31/1 (National Champs)
2012 - 31/1 (National Champs)
2013 - 33/5
2014 - 18/12
2015 - 45/3 (National Champs)
2016 - 34/1

Ohio State's offense and defense have finished:
2010 - 20/4
2011 - 107/19
2012 - 46/34
2013 - 7/47
2014 - 9/19 (National Champs)
2015 - 41/9
2016 - 31/6

Top 25 in both is definitely achievable but not 10 not so much. We definitely have the talent and gaining the talent. But can the new System at defense and our new QBs oick things up fast enough is another thing. Two our Oline is still question marks. We have the talent at Oline to be good, just can we stay healthy enough and get these guys jelly enough this year to do good things??

Lets not forget there are many subgroups of statistics. Say we were top ten defense in the " red zone " & paired that with top ten in yards gained on first down and highest qb rating . Makes a difference. Fast. Lol, making the top 50 in special teams, from over a hundred is going to make a huge difference over a season GBR

If our defense is anywhere close to Top 10-15 this year, then we should build a statue of Diaco outside the stadium

Seriously! Like the Rocky statue that is in Philly, except with Diaco's mug on it. That, or go with the whole Big Red thing in a comical direction and make a statue that looks a lot like Lenin, just with Diaco in his sweatpants outfit.

How about we just sign his paycheck with a nice little bonus on it. We have enough statues of living football coaches in Nebraska.

having or showing a sensible and practical idea of what can be achieved or expected

So the answer re top 10-15 is no. However, it is not outside of the realm of the possible. If both units were in the top 25 I think we would all be quite pleased. Our D was ranked 30 last year, so a top 25 finish is definitely achievable. The offense is a bit of a wildcard. How does Lee perform when the bullets fly? How does our Oline hold up this year? If we get solid QB and Oline play, I think a top 25 finish is possible.

No...Also, keep in mind that if you play in the Big Ten you have a better chance at achieving high defensive numbers than offensive numbers because of the pace of play.

Is it realistic for the offense and defense to be in the top 10-15 in all statustical categories?

Being the old educator I am, read the question. The answer has to be NO. To be in the top 10-15 of ALL statistical categories while "statistically" possible is highly improbable. Although I am not a betting man, if I were and you were willing to bet I would bet against it all day long. If you knew exactly what you had coming back in all areas of your team it would be difficult but with so many unknowns it is a stretch unless you are chuck full of the kool aide.

I care more about top 25 in scoring offense and defense.

Give me a 38 and 17, and I won't care about yardage.

It's so tough with all the high powered offenses in today's world. If we get in the top 25 we'll be fine. I'm expecting big things on defense this year. I was pushing for the change to the 3-4 last year with the lack of depth on the D-line and our athletic linebacker depth. It just made sense. And getting Diaco will bring the fire and intensity our defense needs. I'm actually expecting a top 15 defense.

I don't have the same expectations by labeling a national ranking on them. We have much unproven talent on the front seven at all new positions and responsibilities. What D lineman has proven himself in the past much less in a 3-4? How many all B1G performers anywhere in that group? We have minimal experience at the LB position and they are learning a new system. The back four are good with questions at safety. Enthusiasm can only go so far, you have to have the studs to get the job done. I remember many were so excited about the "fire" a former head coach brought and that wasn't much of a formula for success. I am not saying we don't have them, but I am saying we don't and won't know for a while. To expect this group to play at such a high level all year long to achieve a high national ranking is unrealistic.

I am looking forward to watching this team grow and develop under the new looks. Learning the system and growing some confidence, fewer break downs will be what I will look for. The rest will take care of itself.
