2 points.
1) Is he worth that kind of money ? Like any other hiring transaction, if someone is willing to pay you set amount, then yes that individual is worth that kind of money

2) These contracts are heavily weighted on bonus stipulations and allowances, that can equal up to 90 million. It is not straight out salary.

That’s like I’ve said before. I love college football, I love the pageantry, the drama, the unfolding chapters of each season, I feel myself back on the field each game. I have no desire, admiration, or respect for wanting ‘a successful program’ this badly.

No, but if that's the market rate, that's the market rate. It's just like all of my kid's Lego sets.

I’ve attended a couple of D2 games the last few seasons. They have portal issues too, guys wanting to go D1 and I get that. But those were a good time to just enjoy college football without all that has showed up at the top level.

Unfortunately the public values having a successful football program that much.
Sad. Went to the Furman v Citadel game a few weeks ago. Much more enjoyable than the big time crap.
I went to ETSU and have been to several of their in the past few years ( although none this year) and really enjoy watching them play.

The Clemson game outcome is irrelevant to what I think USC should do after the season is over, Can we afford it? Well Louisiana is a poorer state than South Carolina., Louisiana's median household income is 14% lower than South Carolina's. And homes in Louisiana are 30% less expensive than they are in South Carolina. Maybe LSU has more wealthy alumni than USC? I don't know. Here is what I suspect: some schools are more serious about football than others. USC is among those not serious.

If 90 million for a coach so you can win more football games than everyone else is ‘serious’ then yeah no; I’m among those not serious as well.

YES. If he can build a college football Death Star and win National ChampionshipS.
I said we should have tried to hire him after Spurrier when he was still an assistant and AL. And then again when Mushamp wasent working out and he was at some Fl college as HC.
Fans were against it because they felt he would come here and shake the bushes a little too much and not get along with the great Ray Tanner and BOT. Plus he had a reputation for supposedly being womanizer or something. So we settled for the status quo of course. We care more about hugging babies than winning football games.

My point is not that I'd pay $90 million. My point is that buying out Beamer and hiring a new Head Coach is not an insurmountable barrier, if we want to.

We went from hiring legendary Head Coaches who were past their prime to hiring a proven loser of a Head Coach, then following that up by hiring someone not thought of highly enough to be made an OC or DC, much less a Head Coach. That's why I question whether or not we are SERIOUS about having a championship caliber football program. When we hired proven FBS Head Football Coaches (Carlen and Morrison). it worked out every time. They provided signs they would succeed. But Carlen was fired by corrupt President Jim Holderman for non-football reasons. Morrison died. Thus, before Carlen and Morrison had a chance to really get the ball rolling, it ended for them and us. The formula for building a winner is there, if we just copy it.

I hear you. I watched the Montana/Montana State game today. Super entertaining. It's FCS, but these two fan bases think it's the biggest deal ever.

I am hearing some "out there" rumors concerning Lane.
Nothing that has been confirmed, but the associated word was "WOW".

Strange times indeed.

I don't think so. He is good, but he hasn't really won anything anywhere he has been head coach. Ole Miss has had a lot of wins but they haven't been to the SECCG and I doubt they make it very far in the playoff if they get in this year. Ole Miss loves him and is more than happy with the state of affairs. He's making $8MM a year. I think he is crazy to consider leaving.

When a coach gets that kind of money, there is very little patience from the fans nor should there be. If Kiffin goes to LSU, UF or anywhere and gets huge money, the fans are not going to tolerate being "close" for very long.

I think Kiffin is a very good coach but not nearly worth all the annual hysteria over whether he'll leave for a bigger job. He's gotta win something at some point.

It won't surprise me if he ends up staying at Ole Miss and is just using all this stuff with other school to make a dramatic show out of staying put. That's the only thing that would be Kiffin than leaving for a bigger program.

I think the "Kiffin's Krimson Korner" skit on Tosh.0 was worth at least half that.

The sequel was awesome too.

Yeah, good offensive mind but wouldn't put in the elite head coach category. Guy has paid his dues as a coach though. Was essentially handed the Raiders head coaching job in his early 30s then struggled at UT and Southern Cal and started back over at Florida Atlantic. People were saying the last couple years how Ole Miss is perfect for him because there's no pressure to make the playoffs every year-theyre just happy to be in contention. If he's smart, he'll stay. But he's getting enticing offers to leave.

The real question is whether its worth $90M, plus $25M a year for players, with no guarantee to win a national championship. Quick, who was the national champion in 2010? Would that kind of non-notoriety 15 years later be worth this kind of money? By the way, in 2010 Auburn won the national title.... so you see how that worked out.

If he can make them $91 million dollars then yea. Cowherd had a segment several years ago after Saban signed a big contract and people complained about it. He made the case Saban was underpaid due to how much money he would make for UofA. I don’t remember the particulars but interesting thought.
