Is next year @ Texas a destination worthy of attending?

I’ve always heard Austin,Tx & the atmosphere around their stadium is legendary. Has anyone been to a Texas Longhorns game, & what makes it unique?

I watched a Tx A&M tour of their facilities on the SEC network and it was better than the pros in many areas, and everyone I know and read on these forums said the place was top tier across the board in College Station.

Hated to miss that, but the hype over how great the atmosphere is at the Cotton Bowl , & Austin as well has long been talked about as a top notch destination for swine epidermis.

Looking for input on the where’s and what’s about the place when the Cats play there. Any and all that will be appreciated!

Been there a couple of times. Several SEC venues are better, including A&M. Crowd seemed very tame the games I attended. Many, many beautiful women in sun dresses, cowboy hats and cowboy boots, so not all bad. Parking is a hassle as the stadium is right in campus.

Sixth Street in Austin was a mecca for live music but I've heard that's changed in the last few years. Unfortunately, Austin has developed many of the same problems other big cities have: homeless populations, crime, etc.

It's certainly not the worst place I've been, but, honestly, I was a bit disappointed. From what I've heard, big HS games have the same or better atmosphere, which is just weird, imo.

100K stadium literally in middle of a large city with exactly one interstate highway is not the most fun place in my limited experiences. But if is on your bucket list of SEC stadii, go.

Dam,……it may had been on the list but sounds like a dam sad reality. Hope they don’t come to the Bluegrass and turn it into their paradise.

Austin is a foodie place, and live and die Longhorn football. Would be a good place to go for sure. Have a great Texas BBQ, a few adult beverages and take in Kentucky vs Texas in Austin.

While Austin is a fun town, it's not like the game dominates the city like it does in smaller SEC cities, where the game is the only thing happening that weekend. I'd pass if you have already been to Austin, Nashville, Ashville or any other trendy little big city.

I live in Houston. Austin used to be a nice town. Now it is overrun with illegal immigrants, criminals, cocaine, meth, and ridiculous heavy traffic. Campus is still nice and you can still find good restaurants. But I recommend watching on TV and saving yourself the trouble.

It’s a coin flip on my decision to go. Austin is not even close to the same city it was even 10 years ago because of the same problems many have mentioned on this thread. The campus is cool but a few steps in the wrong direction off campus gets you to things unpleasant to experience.

I'm trying to visit every away stadium in the SEC. They all have strong traditions and unique qualities. I enjoy the experience and not from a haters perspective. I'm soaking up the experience. The food is slightly different and atmosphere changes from place to place.

This is pretty spot on. (Was stationed in the vicinity for a year 7 years ago. Some Family lives in Dallas now so I make it to Dallas and usually make a trip down to Austin to meet some friends from my time living in the area once a year or so now)

Stadium is cool to say you’ve been but the SEC has multiple better atmospheres.

Austin use to be kinda cool when it was a genuine organic “keep Austin weird” but it’s just California Texas now…started about 10 years ago but the remote work capability post Covid rapidly turned it into nothing but California (and some northeast) transplants….a whole lot of LA and San Fran folk fleeing the ridiculous cost of living and homeless issues the last 5 years has Austin looking/feeling more California/Portland than Texas.

If you do go to on Austin and aren’t in your early to mid 20s then you’ll enjoy Rainey St way more than 6th street. 6th is basically college and postgrad bars and clubs now. Rainey still has some character.

I moved from Lexington to Austin in 2007. Built a house in SW Austin near Driftwood and Dripping Springs and lived there until 2013 and loved every minute of it. Life happened and I ended up in Houston for a couple of years and now live about 40 minutes south of Austin towards San Antonio.

Austin has changed a bunch but is still an awesome place. Those that decide to judge a city based on fight videos you see need to step out and live a little. There is one area where all of this activity occurs and that is 6th street in between Congress and I-35. That is the famous 6th street bars. Think of it as EKU Bars back in the day X1000.

A Longhorn Football Game is a social event where people love to have a good time, and it is a good time. The Horn Fans can be loud but not the loudest. The Stadium is great but keep in mind this is a city campus and the Stadium is crammed in between campus and Interstate 35. When there is a big game like when Bama came to visit the crowd will be as jacked as anywhere.

Austin is a great place with much to do. The UK crowd at the game will be huge as their are tons of Alumni/Fans in Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. We had about 10,000 fans in College Station in 2018. I'll share more details about things to do while here later, but just make plans to go. It will be a blast.

Street fighting looks like a waste. One
Punch or two and then you get tackled by a cop who was less than 10 feet from you when you punched.

Absolutely. Lots of live music and great food. We're either going to fly in on a Wednesday and leave on Sunday/Monday or make it a week long road trip with a stop around Lafayette, LA and a day in San Antonio.
Lafayette has 1000X’s better food that the hell hole of Austin. Cajun n Creole 🏆 Austin was taken over by Yankees awhile back

More interested in Austin for the live music, BBQ and game, of course. I have a friend who worked at Bell Helicopter in the Lafayette area for a couple of months before transferring to their East TN facility. He said in his two months there he gained 13 lbs. Hope to hit San Antonio while we're there too.

I remember when the state terminated the Bell contract, their production I think was the deal breaker and they moved their operations to Canada. Glad your friend landed on his feet in Tennessee
Yeah that Cajun/ Creole food will get ya if ya ain’t careful 🍺

Live in Charlotte and visited Austin this summer and was a little dissapointed that it was not more unique, cool. It does seem to have jumped the shark. Funny that the recs I received from a UT grad were more about getting out of town than saying in town. Plenty of bars and resturants that cover all niches but 6th Street is no different than Nashville, New Orleans, Tampa, or Memphis. The town is populated by 27 year olds who just laid half a million down on their starter home so I imagine our fans would find it unappealling. We enjoyed all the spring feed rivers and swimming holes, bbq joints, Gruene, TX south of town. Its cool downtown fronts a lake, which unique for a city of its size.

It's on mine, but we'll see. Went to A&M.
