Is Rattler the best QB option

Was he okay against GA state, and good against Arkansas?

He had 1 td and 2 int's against ga State. And he had 1 td and 1 int against Arkansas. That may be an oversimplified review, but those numbers don't instill confidence. I agree that you can wash out the uga stats.

I suppose my concern is that his td/int numbers look a lot like a continuation of his sophomore year at ou.

Well, I give him a total pass against Ga State b/c the OL was absolutely horrid. Beyond horrid. And against a Sunbelt team at that. Just awful.

They were a little better against Arkansas. But he has had essentially zero run support. We are 117th in the nation in rushing yards. Abysmal. We are as one dimensional as it gets (I don't care what Beamer and Satt say about 3rd and short runs dragging down our average).

I don't excuse all the INTs as some have certainly been his fault, but when you have zero run support and bare minimal protection, what can you do? Right now the offense is essentially Rattler or bust. He basically needs to complete 80% of his passes with no mistakes for this offense to have any chance.

Nothing on the offense is really working right now. RBs suck. OL sucks. WRs have not done very well. So it's very difficult to pinpoint Rattler as the problem.

I get that, and you make good points. I just have this nagging suspicion it's more than that. And it comes primarily from seeing his numbers his sophomore year and this year, and how similar they look. (Td's and int's)

He had the offensive line, receivers and running game at ou.

All true. He certainly has not played as well as I hoped he would with a change of scenery and all. I'm definitely not thrilled with his play.

Well, i agree that the easiest way to see him improve is to give him more help in the form of a running game and a better pocket.

I am on an investment site. It includes a big Oklahoma Sooner fan. I pm'ed him this morning asking his thoughts on Rattler. He pm'ed back re: Rattler. He said:

"Spenser is a top 25 QB. But OU has had so many great QBs that it's very competitive for that starting spot. He was benched after about 3 games last year for Caleb Williams to step up. Then Riley took him with him to USC and Rattler was leaving already via the portal. I think Rattler could have potentially been better than OU's new Florida transfer QB we have this year, but we'll never know now".

My thoughts: OU today is 3-0 and number 5 in the nation. Their current QB is rated as the 23rd in the nation, throwing for 7 TDs and no interceptions and 759 yards. As a team, Oklahoma is 13th in the nation in points scored and 18th in Total Offense. I'm not taking up for Rattler. Just passing along what I was pm'ed and the numbers of the current Oklahoma QB and their team. Rattler has a disadvantage here at SC and it is what has been my concern from the get-go. His QB coach here is also the Offensive Coordinator: Marcus Satterfield. I would not trust Satterfield to take my order at a McDonald's drive-through without screwing it up.

Going back to the investment site. Bye.

The pocket was there against UGA for the most part, though he was pressured 9 times. I just don't know if bad habits had already set in from the Ga State and Arkansas games and, even when there is a pocket, he doesn't trust it. Hopefully, these next 2 games can right the ship in that respect and he can go into the UK game more confident in his protection. The OL needs to do better but obviously, they won't provide perfect protection every time, so he needs to trust it when it's there but handle it when it's not. I'm assuming they'll be able to provide protection against Charlotte and SC State. Someone else commented on there that it would be a bad look for us to pile on against those teams, but we've got junk to work out on offense. We need to run our offense over and over and over against these teams, no matter what the score happens to be.

Is the guy a playmaker? Leading his team? Finding ways to win? What kind of QB does the Top 5 teams have? Is there a correlation?

"Finding a way to win" is one of the most nonsensical things people say. Whoever is considered the top QB in college football now...if you gave us that guy...we'd still be 1-2.

▪ Why not start Luke Doty? He has a full year under his belt in this “offense.” Perhaps he has a better grasp of it. — Gene V.

Let me put the kibosh on this — Luke Doty doesn’t give South Carolina its highest upside at quarterback right now. That’s no knock on Doty, who Shane Beamer said performed well during mop-up duty Saturday. However, if the Gamecocks’ offense is going to punch above its weight this fall, it’s going to do so with Spencer Rattler at its helm. I spelled out a good chunk of this after the game, but it’s worth reiterating.

Rattler has had his moments of late. His first interception on a wheel route to Juju McDowell on Saturday was egregious. His five total interceptions are the most among the 16 Southeastern Conference quarterbacks averaging 15 or more throws per contest. That’s the bad. The good? South Carolina has been vastly more explosive with Rattler at the helm this fall. The Gamecocks had just 16 passing plays of 30 or more yards a season ago. South Carolina already has seven such plays this year and, assuming it keeps on that pace, would finish with 28 on the year — a nearly 75% uptick from last fall and what would be the for a USC offense since at least 2012.

South Carolina has been a bit boom or bust offensively this year. Its 27.03% third-down conversion rate ranks last in the SEC and 123rd of 131 FBS teams. The Gamecocks, and Rattler, need to be more efficient in stringing together drives. Doty figures to be the future at quarterback. Frankly, I’d be shocked if he’s not the starter heading into the 2023 season. That said, Rattler has brought an explosive dynamic to this offense that it hasn’t had in a decade or more. You’ll take some of the mistakes if he continues to make the “wow” throws that tend to come with them.

I agree with most of what you are saying. But I do think playing both would be a good thing, especially over the next 2 games.
1. It gives defenses more things/looks to prepare for.
2. It gives the coaches a better idea of what Doty can do in a game situation.
3. Doty gets valuable experience in preparation for being next years starter.

I hope Rattler turns it up a notch in the next 2 games and eliminates the mistakes and gains confidence for whats upcoming but like the idea of playing both in some kind of rotation but nothing set in stone like alternating possessions or quarters. Play whoever is hot at the moment.
