Unbelievable game. Still, beat Algeria by 2 goals we are in the knockout round, if my math is right.

If they win today and against Slovenia they'll have 7 points, assuming the US wins against Algeria (you know what they say about assuming) we'll have 5, Slovenia will have 4, and Algeria 0

If they win today and lose to Slovenia and US beats Algeria- Slovenia 7, US 5, England 4, and Algeria 0.

If they draw both and US wins- Slovenia 5, US 5, England 3, Algeria 1

If the US wins against Algeria they are almost a sure bet to advance- assumingnothing crazy happens to England.

I think the only possible way for us not to advance (assuming we beat Algeria) would beif a)England and Slovenia play to a draw and b) Slovenia scores more goals against England than we do against Algeria and c) we only beat Algeria by 1 goal. Any other scenario, and I think we advance.

That is the best scenario overall the way I see it. That way a win over Algeria next absolutely seals the deal, and even a tie could get us there if Slovenia beats England.

It would bea little better for us if they did draw 0-0, but I don't think it really matters much to us what happens this afternoon.

2nd off, while yes, we might mathematically be better off if England and Algeria did tie, I'd rather play an Algeria that has 0 points and knows they're out of the tournament than one with 1 point who could advance with a win.

I think England will beat Algeria 3-0 and they will have packed it in by the time they play us. We'll beat them 3-1 and advance no matter what happens in the England-Slovenia game.

We don't need them having any extra motivation. We want them down and beat their ***.

So what happens if we beat Algeria to get to 5 points, England wins today and ties Slovenia, so that Slovenia, England, and the US all have 5 points?

Is that why we need a 2 goal win, to ensure we would have the goal differential over Slovenia in that scenario regardless of how bad England beat Algeria, in the hypothetical of course?

if it is a 3 way tie @ 5 points, thenthe next tie breaker isgoals scored- the US would be 1 up on Slovenia.

Slovenia and England both advance with a draw in that last game that is exactly what will happen. It wouldn't be the first time something like that has happeened in the WC.

so I can bet against it. :)

I hate Algeria having something to play for too, but if we can't beat them, we don't deserve advancing.

Still, anything can happen and we don't want a draw (although we would still move on if Slovenia wins and the way England is playing, my son's u16 DII team might challenge them right now).
