Is spring practice just not valued anymore?

All these portals in and out, makes me wonder. When I was growing up, it was considered necessary. It was the hardest hitting of the year. Now even the high schools take it easy.

Is this just a old school thing that should go away?

Most of the portal stuff is depth after spring practice. Not all, but most. No point in keeping guys you don't feel can compete against our opponents. It's basically a tryout now for fall portal guys and non-starters.

Spring practice is still necessary

The difference is in what’s emphasized
Good point. It’s one of those things about getting old. You wake up 20 years later and shlt don’t look right.

Nowadays it’s just plays plays plays. Reads reads reads.

But on the other hand…..injury wise…..wouldn’t it be best to get injured in spring rather than fall? I think they need to get rid of the post spring portal window.

Implantation of offense and defense: It’s better to have it done in the spring

I’m not a big fan of hard hitting practices.

Do exercises to be ready for the fall.

Get people prepared.

But let’s not go out of the way to injure ourselves.

Yeah, I know I’m a contrarian

It’s a logical viewpoint. But it can be argued that physical practices make physical football teams. It can also backfire.

I think smart strength training is more important now than ever before.

Once they get to contracts and buy outs it will be more important. I can see the point it not being since guys come in before and leave after then some more come in after.

Yeah. Most teams have their roster pretty much set after December transfers & high school signees. Most spring transfers are guys who got cut or marginal lower division players moving up.

There is definitely a benefit to hitting hard in practice and it establishing an identity as a hard hitting team and getting players used to it. There's also a cost to it, obviously, with injuries but more so with just additional head trauma.

The bigger issue to me is that you have to have physical practices to teach fundamentals. You can probably do that smarter without drills that are basically designed to get people hitting hard. But I would assume you need some full speed hitting to put the fundamentals into practice.
