I will say there should be some sort of scale. For instance, 1 SECC in Football = 5 SECC in Baseball.

I love baseball and enjoy basketball. But, I'd be willing to have 10 straight losing seasons in both sports for one undefeated season in football.

1 SEC football championship =
3 SEC basketball championships =
15 SEC baseball championships

Seriously, there's not a "Big 3" sports.

I'm not completely incapacitated. I've just seen this before quite a bit. Basically, it tells you that MSU has had better baseball and basketball programs than Ole Miss over the years. I don't think that's really even an argument.

What it doesn't say is that neither of us have had anything to write home about in football over the last 30 or so years with the exception of a handful of seasons by each team that still came up short of being great on a national scale.

And yes, I do agree with others in this thread. While I enjoy basketball and baseball, and I get into both sports with my school, if football was all year round, they'd both be an afterthought to me. And I believe that's probably the case with at least 90% of SEC sports fans. The primary reason I care about baseball and basketball is because there is no football, and I need something to follow.

There are no big 3 sports in the SEC. There is football, and then there is everything else. Basketball and baseball fall at the top of the heap of the "everything else" category, but in comparison to football, they mean very little in the SEC.

Baseball - Conference Champions 1948, 1949, 1965, 1966, 1970, 1971, 1979, 1987, 1989
Conference Tourney Champs 1979, 1985, 1987, 1990, 2001, 2005
Basketball - Conference Champions 1959, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1991, and 2004
Conference Tourney Champs 1996 and 2002
Football - Conference Champions 1941

For both schools, football, men's basketball, and baseball are the three most attended and discussed ,and they are known together as the "Big 3 Sports." All-time against each other in the Big 3 Sports, Mississippi State leads the Rebels 403 to 348, a 55-game lead.

Should we just invite MedDawg on over and get it over with. It is what it is. MSU has had pretty competitve baseball and basketball programs in the SEC over the last 30 years. Ole Miss has not. We have both sucked in football for the most part since black people started playing. I don't need any numbers to tell me that.

It's not #1 - football and #2 - everything else any more. It's more like:

#1 - Football

#2 - Basketball

#3 - Baseball

#4 - Everything else.</p>

I think Ky fans disagree along with Fl and Ark fans in basketball. I believe baseball is an important sport to Msu fans as well as Lsu baseball fans. I think you are speaking for yourself and Ole Miss's past history football program, please don't sell the SEC fans short when it comes to baseball and basketball. If you look at the tournaments (SEC) for baseball and basketball then you will realize numbers don't lie and you are way off base when saying the other sports don't really matter. Yeah football is number one but not to every school in the SEC.
Just saying.

FOOTBALL:

MSU:

Conference Championships:
1941

National Championships:
0

Ole Miss:
Conference Championships:
1947
1954
1955
1960
1962
1963

National championships:
1955
1959
1960
1962 (Only NC that is "recognized", whatever that means, it was a long time ago.)

Rebels win the football comparison easily. As for basketball, I just don't care, even if we are good. I've come around to baseball though, and I we're catching up with MSU there.

and I don't just mean State's.

And damn, I've never seen anyone claim 4 nat'l titles for Ole Miss. Even the official ole miss athletics site doesn't even claim 4. Hell, why don't you just round up to 10.

You won one of those bogus National Championships in '59 when you didn't even win the SEC?

And you can't even claim a bogus one in '55.

Football is No. 1 at every school in the SEC with the exception of Kentucky and probably Vanderbilt.

Sure other schools do support their basketball and baseball programs, and they do so probably better than most conferences. However, the way I see it, there are 10 football schools in the SEC, 1 basketball school, and 1 academic school.

Florida won back to back national titles in basketball, but I guarantee you that if football were played from January to April, you wouldn't see a whole lot of discussion about basketball in Florida. A good example is when they lost a December basketball game at Florida State in 2006. The basketball team was top 5 in the country and all anyone cared to talk about was the football team's upcoming national title game.

LSU fans love their baseball, but they still care much more about football. Take one look at Media Days for an example. Basketball and baseball get nowhere near that sort of coverage or hype in the SEC.

I didn't say that other sports don't matter. I just said that in the SEC pecking order, football comes first, basketball is a distant second, and baseball is an even further third. There is no other sport in the SEC where fans are nearly as passionate as they are about football. You'll have a hard time convincing me of that, with the exception of Kentucky, as I mentioned.

One prime example of how football is king in the SEC is the fact that the teams with the largest athletic budgets are the most successful in football. You can almost always bet on that, with only the occasional hiccup. However, teams with smaller budgets have a chance in basketball and baseball in the SEC. That's because schools in the SEC spend the bulk of their money on football, meaning that the disparity between rich and poor shows up in football but not quite as much in basketball and baseball.

but I do look at all 3 sports' recruiting. And there's no doubt football's the money sport.

However I like basketball and baseball postseason much more than football postseason, except for whatever bowl MSU might be playing in. I hardly watch the bowls. I turn to the NFL at that point. I still favor the bowl system, because I think it favors the little people like MSU, but if I pulled for Georgia or LSU, I'm sure I'd want the playoff. Which is another thread altogether.

Well,

MSU football :

Champions of the Galaxy: 1988, 2005, 2006, 1878, 2009 --- since we are writing fiction, I thought it should be a little more entertaining than the ******** you just dreamed up in your little rebel dream.

is the only conference that really cares about the sport. So it's number one. It isn't on the scale of football but still it's way up there as far as crowds and selling tickets. You forgot or you have forgotten that Ark travels very well when it comes to basketball as does Msu and Lsu. My point to you is you underestimate the importance of basketball and baseball to the SEC fan base. As for as football, Msu, SC, Vandy, and Ky have no tradition, Ole Miss fans have more passion to football because of your past history compared to Msu. But like you said, the last 30 years haven't been much for either school except we have had more interest than ya'll because it's about the only time we realized we can compete.

A) In Starkville on a cool October day to watch MSU vs. Tennessee.

B) In Starkville on a cold January day to watch MSU vs. LSU.

C) In Starkville on a warm May day to watch MSU vs. Auburn.

I believe that's his point. One of those answers will win by 90%. Choose which one.

...and congratulations, you hit all three points!

1) Made up national championships.
2) We don't care about basketball.
3) We didn't care about baseball until now, when we've gotten good.

So utterly weak, my friend.

Hey guys, I know this is all in good fun, but you have to admit it's sad that State has no claim to any NC in any sport. I don't even believe the link I posted. It's like adding up all of Alabama's 12 NC's. Some of them don't wash.
